Conflict Between Jockeys at Cheltenham Festival
Irish jockey Declan Queally finished fifth in the Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival but was involved in a dispute with English jockey Nico de Boinville before the race began on day two of the event.
Queally, who was riding I'll Sort That, and De Boinville, aboard Act Of Innocence, were seen exchanging words at the start line as the race was delayed. The Novices' Hurdle experienced multiple false starts, leading to a switch from a planned rolling start to a standing start at the tape, which caused jockeys to jostle for position.
During the commotion, Queally appeared to fall off his horse before the race started and required medical attention. He was examined by a doctor and cleared to compete. Additionally, Ballyfad was kicked prior to the race and was assessed by a veterinarian amid the hectic moments.
"Being abused by an English rider, Nico de Boinville, not very nice.
"I am an amateur, coming over here and riding in front of my kids. Horrific."
Queally made these remarks to ITV Racing after the race before entering the weight room. In response, De Boinville commented on Queally's statement by saying:
"Maybe he should look in the mirror."
Criticism of Race Starting Procedures
Horse racing legend Ruby Walsh criticized the race starters, describing the situation as a "joke." He expressed frustration about the lack of technological advancement in starting procedures, stating:
"It's 2026. How has nobody devised a tape that rolls in front of the horses?
"The tape should have been in front of them when they went onto the track and it should be moved in front of the horses.
"We can send missiles after fighter planes in the gulf but nobody can design a rolling flyaway tape."
Walsh also highlighted that the trust between jockeys and starters has been compromised, especially following similar issues in the third race of the afternoon, the Handicap Hurdle, which was won by Jingko Blue.
In that race, several horses were trapped between the field and a fence when the start signal was given, causing them to lose ground early. Walsh elaborated on the impact of the faulty start:
"Big time (the trust is broken). The BHA [British Horseracing Authority] need to give their starters the right mechanisms to be able to start races.
"A quarter of this field had no chance. That's why [Jingko Blue jockey] James Bowen ended up where he did.
"Lucky Place, Puturhandstogether, Rambo T, Bunting, HMS Seahorse, had no chance when the tape went back. Jingko Blue got a flyer.
"With the wrong mechanism, you can complain to the starter all you want, but if BHA are serious, they will do something about the mechanisms."

Summary of Events and Reactions
The chaotic start to the Novices' Hurdle and the Handicap Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival has sparked debate about the adequacy of current race starting methods. The incidents led to jockeys being physically jostled and horses being disadvantaged, raising concerns about safety and fairness.
Declan Queally's confrontation with Nico de Boinville brought further attention to the tensions caused by the disorganized start, while Ruby Walsh's comments underscored the need for technological improvements and better trust between jockeys and race officials.
