Hawkins Secures Spot in Welsh Open Final
Barry Hawkins secured a 6-4 victory over Wu Yize to advance to the Welsh Open final for the second time in his career. The match took place in Llandudno during the last-four stage of the 2018 Welsh Open.
Hawkins, nicknamed 'The Hawk,' began the semi-final strongly, winning four of the first five frames. His performance included notable breaks of 72 and 66. However, Wu, aged 22 from China, mounted a strong comeback, leveling the match at 4-4 by winning three consecutive frames. This impressive streak featured two half-centuries and a 122 break in the eighth frame.
Despite Wu's continued challenge, including an impressive 59 break in the ninth frame, Hawkins narrowly won that frame to regain the lead. The 46-year-old then efficiently closed out the match to secure his place in the final scheduled for Sunday.
"I'm over the moon, I'm pleased with that. He threw everything at me at the end there," Hawkins told .
"4-1 up, I miscued a red with the rest and then I didn't see a ball. He just went into one.
"He missed a black off the spot at 4-4. I should have cleared up there. I let the white run away and thought 'that's my chance gone'."
Hawkins will face the winner of the semi-final match between five-time Welsh Open champion John Higgins and Jack Lisowski, which is scheduled for Saturday evening.
