Luke Donald Becomes First European Captain Since Tony Jacklin to Win Back-to-Back Ryder Cups

Luke Donald will aim to become the first captain to secure three consecutive Ryder Cup victories after being confirmed as the European captain for the 2025 edition in Ireland.

Donald, who has won the Ryder Cup four times as a player and served twice as vice-captain, led Europe to a 16½-11½ victory over the USA in Rome in 2023 and masterminded the dramatic 15-13 triumph in New York in 2024.

He will be the first European captain to serve three consecutive terms since Bernard Gallacher from 1991 to 1995.

The 2025 Ryder Cup will be held at Adare Manor in County Limerick from 17-19 September.

"The last two Ryder Cups have meant a lot to me and my family. I didn't imagine this third time would come," said Donald.
"Celebrating on that Sunday night in New York after a pressure-packed week in a tough environment, I thought maybe my job was done. But maybe there is a little more story to tell.
"This Ryder Cup captaincy journey has given me so much focus, so much purpose and it is something I don't take for granted.
"It's a real privilege and I am certainly looking forward to another home Ryder Cup."

The USA have yet to name their captain, with 15-time major winner Tiger Woods reportedly considering an offer to succeed Keegan Bradley.

Europe's 2025 victory was their first on American soil since 2012, making Donald only the second captain to lead the team to wins both at home and away since Tony Jacklin in 1985 and 1987.

Donald, 48, a former world number one, was initially appointed as a late replacement for the 2023 matches in Rome after LIV Golf defector Henrik Stenson was deemed ineligible to captain while playing on the breakaway tour.

He led Europe to a commanding victory over the USA at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club.

In New York, Donald's team built a record 11½-4½ lead going into the Sunday singles before holding off an American comeback in a highly charged atmosphere.

Donald also played in Europe's 2006 win on Irish soil at the K Club.

"The Irish golf fans are some of the best in the world. They are so passionate about the game, so hospitable and so down to earth," he said.
"They will bring such a great energy to the Ryder Cup. I am sure they will get behind our players and cheers us on.
"That's what you want from a crowd - to pick you up in those low moments and keep you going when things are going well."

Rahm Participation in Doubt

Donald’s leadership style received widespread praise from his players after both victories.

Following the event at Bethpage, Spaniard Jon Rahm described Donald’s work as "astonishing" across his two terms.

However, Rahm's participation in the 2025 Ryder Cup is uncertain due to his ongoing dispute with the DP World Tour.

This week, Rahm accused the tour of "extorting players" and explained why he has not joined a group of LIV Golf competitors who signed a settlement allowing them to compete in both organisations' tournaments.

In February, eight players received releases from the DP World Tour to participate in LIV Golf events in 2024, enabling them to retain memberships and remain eligible for Ryder Cup selection.

The waiver included agreements to pay outstanding fines reportedly around £2.5 million for playing in LIV events without DP World Tour permission, withdrawal of all pending appeals, and acceptance to participate in designated DP World Tour tournaments.

What Donald Had to Weigh Up - Analysis

Donald’s reappointment was widely expected, especially from the perspective of the European Ryder Cup committee aiming for another home victory, the players who admire him, and the thousands of European fans chanting "two more years" during celebrations at Bethpage.

The only person who seemed hesitant was Donald himself.

He has invested tremendous effort into the role—arguably more than any other captain in the 99-year history of the Ryder Cup. It is understandable he took time to decide whether to continue.

After Europe’s narrow victory, Donald appeared exhausted during a interview, not from celebrations but from the mental and physical demands of the entire Bethpage cycle.

He had to consider whether he had the energy to undertake another 18 months of detailed research, preparation, and execution.

Donald’s leadership is characterised by warm man-management and meticulous attention to detail.

He regularly messages a broad pool of potential players to make each feel integral to the team.

He has even requested that cracks in hotel doors be covered to block light disrupting players’ sleep.

These small adjustments contribute to the larger mechanism Donald has built his Ryder Cup success upon.

During the celebrations at Bethpage, Shane Lowry remarked that whoever follows Donald will face the challenge of filling a void comparable to that left by Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.

If Donald completes a rare treble, similar to Ferguson’s 1999 achievement, his legacy among British sporting leaders will be firmly established.
