Arnold Palmer Invitational - Second Round Standings
Daniel Berger leads the Arnold Palmer Invitational at 13 under par, extending his advantage after the second round. Following him are Akshay Bhatia at eight under, with Sahith Theegala, Ludvig Aberg, and Collin Morikawa tied at seven under. Ricky Fowler holds sixth place at six under. Other notable players include Rory McIlroy at four under, Scottie Scheffler at three under, and Tommy Fleetwood at one over.
Berger Extends Lead with Consistent Play
Daniel Berger, 32, who was part of the victorious US team at the 2021 Ryder Cup, continued his strong performance at Bay Hill by shooting a four-under-par 68 on Friday. This followed his impressive opening round of 63, just one stroke shy of the Bay Hill course record. Berger's last PGA Tour victory was at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February 2021, marking five years since his most recent win.
Berger's steady play included a clean back nine featuring three birdies, which helped solidify his five-shot lead heading into the weekend. Despite a history of injuries, including a back issue that sidelined him for 18 months and a fractured finger sustained at the BMW Championship in August last year, Berger is positioning himself for a potential victory and the £3 million top prize.
"I actually feel like I played better [today], the course was a little tougher," Berger said.
"I'm looking forward to the next couple of days and seeing the challenge they bring."
McIlroy Rallies to Improve Position
Rory McIlroy, representing Northern Ireland, improved his standing after a level-par opening round by shooting a 68 in the second round to reach four under par. He remained even through the front nine but birdied four of the next seven holes, climbing the leaderboard to a tie for ninth place as he prepares for the third round.
Other Notable Performances
Akshay Bhatia, an American competitor, posted the best score of the day with a 66, moving to eight under and positioning himself as Berger's closest challenger. Sahith Theegala and Collin Morikawa, both from the US, along with Sweden's Ludvig Aberg, are one shot behind Bhatia at seven under. Ricky Fowler is in sixth place at six under.
World number one Scottie Scheffler, also from the US, was on track to match his opening round 70 but dropped a shot on the 18th hole, finishing the round at three under. Tommy Fleetwood rallied with three birdies on the back nine, improving to one over par and securing a position inside the weekend cut-off.
Context and Outlook
Berger's performance comes after overcoming significant physical setbacks, including a prolonged absence due to a back injury and a fractured finger. His current form suggests a strong chance to claim his first PGA Tour victory in five years at this prestigious event.
