Wales Suffer Heavy Defeat to France in World Cup Qualifying
Wales, currently ranked 15th globally, faced a significant setback in their Hockey World Cup qualifying campaign after a 5-0 loss to 9th-ranked France in Santiago, Chile.
Victor Charlet initiated the scoring for France in the second quarter by converting a penalty stroke, giving the French team a 1-0 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, Benjamin Marque extended France's advantage with a powerful reverse stick shot from a tight angle, beating Wales goalkeeper Toby Reynolds-Cotterill.
Charlet further increased the lead four minutes later by scoring from a penalty corner, putting France in a commanding position heading into the final quarter.
Charlet completed his hat-trick with another penalty corner goal, and Marque added his second goal, intensifying Wales' difficulties.
After two matches in their pool, Wales have accumulated only one point, following a 2-2 draw against the hosts Chile on Sunday.
Wales will face 20th-ranked Scotland in their final pool match on Wednesday at 21:00 GMT. A victory is essential for Wales to maintain any hope of advancing to the semi-finals of the qualifying tournament.
Led by Danny Newcombe, Wales are aiming to qualify for the World Cup for only the second time in their history, having made their debut in the tournament in India in 2023.
Meanwhile, Scotland and Chile played to a 2-2 draw in their Pool A match on Tuesday.
