Leclerc Leads Ferrari One-Two in Australian GP Practice
Charles Leclerc secured the fastest time in the opening practice session of the Australian Grand Prix, marking a strong start to the new Formula 1 season. Leclerc’s performance placed him ahead of seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who initially held the top spot.
Leclerc overtook Hamilton with a late lap that put him 0.469 seconds clear. Prior to this, Hamilton, Leclerc, and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen were separated by less than 0.1 seconds, demonstrating a tightly contested session among the frontrunners.
Max Verstappen’s new teammate, Isack Hadjar, finished fourth fastest, 0.820 seconds behind Leclerc. The 18-year-old British driver Arvid Lindblad, making his debut with the Racing Bulls team, secured fifth place.
Aston Martin Faces Reliability Issues
Aston Martin continued to struggle during the session, reflecting their challenging start to the season. Fernando Alonso was unable to run any laps due to a problem with his Honda power unit. His teammate Lance Stroll completed only three laps before an engine issue was detected on his car as well.
Team principal Adrian Newey revealed on Thursday that the vibrations from the Honda engine were severe enough that Alonso was limited to 25 laps to avoid permanent nerve damage in his hands.
"The vibrations from the Honda engine were so bad that Alonso felt unable to do more than 25 laps without risking permanent nerve damage in his hands."
This appears to be another reliability setback for Honda’s engine, which has struggled to meet Formula 1 standards following the introduction of new regulations this season.
Mercedes and McLaren Performance
Mercedes entered the Melbourne event as pre-season favourites but had a subdued practice session. George Russell finished seventh fastest, 1.104 seconds off the pace, trailing behind McLaren’s Oscar Piastri.
It is important to note that practice session times can be influenced by varying car specifications, fuel loads, and engine modes, making it difficult to assess true performance.
McLaren experienced gearbox problems during the session, with world champion Lando Norris finishing in 18th place.
Other Notable Performances
Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes was eighth fastest, ahead of Audi’s Gabriel Bortoleto. Nico Hulkenberg, Bortoleto’s teammate, completed the top 10.
Haas driver Esteban Ocon placed 11th, separated from British teammate Oliver Bearman by Williams’ Carlos Sainz and Racing Bull Liam Lawson.
The new Cadillac team avoided last place, thanks to Aston Martin’s difficulties. Sergio Perez recorded the 19th fastest time, with Valtteri Bottas in 20th.
