Antonelli Secures Victory in Silverstone Sprint

Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes overtook Lewis Hamilton on the Hangar Straight to claim victory in the sprint race at the British Grand Prix held at Silverstone.

The 19-year-old Italian driver patiently closed the gap to Hamilton after an intense opening phase involving McLaren's Lando Norris, Mercedes' George Russell, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who engaged in a series of position exchanges early in the race.

Antonelli allowed the race to settle before methodically pursuing Hamilton at the front. On lap eight, after conserving his battery charge strategically, he made a decisive move on the Hangar Straight to pass Hamilton and take the lead.

Prior to this successful overtake, Antonelli attempted to pass Hamilton at Brooklands corner at the end of the Wellington Straight but was initially repelled. However, he persisted and executed the pass on the Hangar Straight.

Hamilton maintained a strong defense but was unable to prevent Antonelli from extending his championship lead to 43 points ahead of Russell.

"It was a very fun first 10 laps with Lewis," Antonelli said. "We were both pushing very hard. When I got into overtake (mode), I knew my chance was coming. When I got alongside in Brooklands he used the boost and I decided to wait and then I got close and used everything."
Hamilton commented, "Tough race to keep the Mercedes behind, as I said it might be. And with it being so windy today, big headwind down the back straight, he came flying past. We have work to do to try and close that gap as we can keep up."

Midfield Battles and Position Changes

Behind the leading duo, Lando Norris delivered an impressive performance by advancing from sixth on the grid to fourth place on the first lap and then overtaking Russell on the second lap.

The early stages featured intense battles among Norris, Russell, and Verstappen, with multiple position swaps. Norris eventually secured third place and began to distance himself from the competitors behind.

"It was a very good race," Verstappen said. "I'm very, very happy, good start, good first lap, not the pace to go with these guys but had a good battle with George. Pleasantly surprised."

Russell managed to overtake Verstappen on lap nine, but Verstappen soon fell behind Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who passed him on the following lap.

Despite dropping back, Verstappen held off McLaren's Oscar Piastri to finish sixth.

In the closing laps, Red Bull's Liam Lawson successfully defended his position against an attack from teammate Isack Hadjar, securing the final points positions.
