Overview of Garnacho's Season

Alejandro Garnacho has scored eight goals and provided four assists across all competitions for Chelsea this season.

The 21-year-old Argentine, known for his multiple tattoos inspired by his favourite show Stranger Things, is currently facing challenges in establishing himself at Stamford Bridge. Unlike many characters in Stranger Things who experience significant growth, Garnacho is still awaiting his breakthrough.

He has struggled to make a significant impact amid the squad, having been linked with a transfer and facing criticism for limited attacking output and occasional defensive lapses.

Under Liam Rosenior’s management, Garnacho has started only seven of the first 20 games, with most opportunities coming in cup matches against lower-tier teams such as Pafos, Charlton, Hull City, and Wrexham.

Signed for £40 million from Manchester United last summer, questions remain about his future and potential at Chelsea.

A New Chapter in West London

When asked in December if he regretted the manner of his Manchester United departure, Garnacho responded simply with "no."

In a recent interview with Premier League Productions, he expressed his affection for United, recalling positive memories including scoring in the 2024 FA Cup final victory over Manchester City, who are set to visit Chelsea soon.

"I remember that, in the last six months, I was not playing like before at Manchester United," he said. "I started to be on the bench. It's not such a bad thing - I was only 20 years old - but in my mind it was like I had to play every game.
"In my mind, maybe it was also on me. I started to do some bad things. But it was just a moment in life and sometimes you have to make decisions. I am really proud to be here [at Chelsea] and still in the Premier League at a club like this.
"About United, I have nothing wrong to say about the club, anyone at the club or my team-mates. It was just a moment that changed and life continues. I have no regrets."

The controversies Garnacho referred to involved accusations of ill-discipline, lack of professionalism, and a series of public social media posts by him and his brother. These factors contributed to his exit under former manager Ruben Amorim, with Garnacho choosing not to renew his contract and securing a move to Chelsea.

Since joining Stamford Bridge, Garnacho has consistently stated he is "happy here," praising vice-captain and fellow Argentine Enzo Fernandez as "like my dad," similar to the respect he showed for Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes.

He has acknowledged the need to improve quietly during training and has focused on enhancing his defensive contributions.

With Jamie Gittens, a rival left-wing option, sidelined for three months due to recurring hamstring injuries, Garnacho still has a chance to make a late-season impact.

Despite limited playing time, manager Rosenior praised Garnacho last month:

"He's got huge ability and potential. For any young player, the biggest thing to be challenged on is consistency.
"But he's shown really good signs - not just in training, but in meetings - that he's on a really good track."

Regarding opposition fans often booing Garnacho, Rosenior commented:

"Maybe it's because people judge a book by its cover."

Garnacho told Premier League Productions this week that he is aware some perceive him as "arrogant" and that his bleached blond hair and tattoos attract both positive and negative attention, but he considers himself just a "normal boy."

Regarding potential moves this summer, Chelsea have denied any decisions despite links to a loan to Argentine club River Plate.

Having cost £40 million and not being among the club's highest earners, Garnacho remains affordable for many European teams. Chelsea also plan to add another attacker alongside Sporting's Geovany Quenda, signed in March 2025 to join after this season, indicating some current squad members may be sold.

'A Lot More to Come'

Garnacho's standout performance this season was in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg at home against Arsenal, where he scored twice in a 3-2 defeat, with Chelsea eventually losing the tie 4-2 on aggregate.

He averages one goal every 4.6 games this season, a slight improvement over his Manchester United rate of one every 5.5 games across all competitions.

With eight goals and four assists in 37 appearances, his overall contribution is reasonable. However, his Premier League record shows just one goal in 20 appearances (1,122 minutes), underperforming his expected goals figure of 3.11 from 28 shots.

Garnacho has also faced criticism for lapses at set-pieces and failing to track back during league losses to Brentford, Bournemouth, and West Ham.

Additionally, the Madrid-born player, part of Argentina's 2024 Copa America-winning squad, has not added to his eight international caps since joining Chelsea.

Garnacho acknowledges he has not yet reached his peak and stated:

"There is a lot more to come, this is just the start.
"I joined two months after the rest without pre-season, then you need time to adapt to a different club and a different place.
"Sometimes the first season is harder but I will work very hard in the games we have left.
"I will try to be ready from the start in pre-season because I know what I can do and that's the most important thing to have the confidence in the player I can be.
"Of course, in football you have to show it and that's what I have to do."

Despite early promise following his Manchester United debut at 17 against Chelsea in 2022, statistics suggest Garnacho's progress has been slow.

His story carries a nostalgic element, reflected in his tattoos from television series such as Stranger Things and Prison Break, symbolizing his ongoing wait to experience the freedom to perform and fully realize his talent.
