Fletcher's Scotland Debut and World Cup Call-Up

Tyler Fletcher made his Scotland debut in the friendly victory over Curacao on Saturday.

Life can take unexpected turns. The Fletcher family had planned to attend the World Cup this summer regardless.

After a promising season with his father Darren's Manchester United Under-18s team—despite losing both the FA Youth Cup and Premier League Under-18s finals—and with twin brothers Tyler and Jack both starting in the Premier League 2 final loss to Brighton, the family was set to travel around the United States to watch Scotland's matches.

However, Tyler Fletcher, who had only made two senior substitute appearances totaling 17 minutes (16 of which were on the final day of the Premier League season at Brighton), received a World Cup call-up from Scotland manager Steve Clarke.

This remarkable development echoes the experience of Norman Whiteside, who was called into Northern Ireland's 1982 World Cup squad after just two senior appearances for Manchester United.

Clarke's unexpected selection highlights Fletcher's professionalism, diligence, and work ethic demonstrated in training. These qualities earned him a place on the bench for the pre-tournament friendly against Curacao after being invited to Clarke's training camp last week, initially to gauge the demands of international football. Fletcher made a very positive impression on Scotland's coaching staff.

When Billy Gilmour suffered a first-half injury with significant implications for the Napoli midfielder, Fletcher was the immediate replacement but was held back initially out of caution by Clarke.

Upon entering at half-time, Fletcher displayed a level of maturity that did not surprise the youth coaches who have worked with him at Manchester United.

Progression Through Manchester United and International Youth Levels

Tyler began the season slightly behind his twin brother Jack, who has chosen to represent England at youth level and played against Tyler in a UEFA Under-19 European qualifier in November, a match England won.

Tyler ultimately surpassed Jack, earning the accolade of Manchester United's Under-21 Player of the Year. He received the award shortly before the first team’s final home game of the campaign against Nottingham Forest, just hours after the Premier League 2 final defeat.

Tyler was named on the bench for 11 of United's last 14 games, having initially been called up by Ruben Amorim for the home win over Newcastle on 26 December—a game in which Jack played.

His senior debut came as a last-minute substitute for Kobbie Mainoo against Tottenham at Old Trafford on 7 February. This marked the first academy player Michael Carrick introduced as United’s manager.

Tyler and Jack: Twin Talents with Individual Paths

Both Tyler and Jack were excellent long-distance runners and footballers during their primary school years and have often been viewed as a pair.

While they have drawn strength from each other’s presence throughout their development—initially at Manchester City before transferring to Manchester United in 2023—they are distinct individuals. This distinction extends beyond Tyler’s beard, which helped differentiate the twins.

Frequently selected together in United’s Under-21 midfield this season, Tyler primarily operates as a number six or eight, while Jack plays slightly further forward.

Influence of Darren Fletcher and Personal Attributes

Darren Fletcher, capped 80 times by Scotland but who never participated in a major tournament, has played a significant role in shaping his sons’ careers. Both Tyler and Jack are often described as having traits similar to their father, including being "really good lads."

However, Darren Fletcher was keen to ensure his sons progressed beyond the Under-18 level before accepting his coaching role this season to avoid any conflicts.

Those familiar with Tyler describe him as a confident, driven young man who is also low maintenance. He has been characterized as "polite and conscientious."

Physically, Tyler has settled into his development phase, which is crucial at an age where growth can occur in spurts.

Professional Development and Integration into Senior Football

Twelve months before his international debut, Fletcher made two brief appearances for Manchester United during the final game of their controversial post-season tour of Asia.

His integration into the senior ranks and strong performances during frequent training call-ups by Carrick were reflected in his invitation to the end-of-season squad dinner, organized by captain Bruno Fernandes after the Forest game.

United coaches note that alongside his stamina and athleticism—which they expect to improve—Fletcher’s overall game has developed significantly. His ball skills, vision, and game understanding suggest he will become more versatile over time.

Fletcher has gradually adapted to men's football, featuring for the Under-21 side in competitions such as the National League Cup at venues including Brackley, Solihull, and Tamworth, and in the EFL Trophy against Lincoln, Barnsley, and Notts County. His appearance at Brighton alongside Shea Lacey confirmed Carrick’s view that Fletcher is among the academy players most prepared to make the step up.

Initially, Fletcher was expected to be among the young players forming the core squad for United’s pre-season fixtures in Helsinki against Wrexham on 18 July and the subsequent trip to Rosenborg in Norway. These plans may now change due to his World Cup commitments.

"The best day of my life," was how Fletcher described his first team debut in February. That might have dropped down to number two.
