Turkey Eliminated as 10-Man Paraguay Hold On for World Cup Victory

Turkey exited the World Cup after a 1-0 loss to 10-man Paraguay, despite 62 shots over two games without scoring. Paraguay’s Matias Galarza scored the tournament’s fastest goal, securing a vital win.

Turkey’s World Cup Hopes Dashed Despite Dominance

Turkey entered their first World Cup in 24 years with high hopes and a squad featuring emerging talents, but they were eliminated after a goalless and tearful exit following another disappointing failure to score against Paraguay.

Despite having a numerical advantage for over half the match, Turkey suffered a 1-0 defeat to the resilient South American side. They recorded 32 shots on goal but were unable to find the net, resulting in elimination with one match remaining in the group stage. This followed a similar pattern from their opening 2-0 loss to Australia, where 30 attempts were met with strong defensive resistance and poor finishing.

The combined total of 62 shots without a goal over two matches is the highest recorded in any two-match span in World Cup history since data collection began in 1966. This inefficiency was starkly contrasted by Paraguay’s clinical execution, as Matias Galarza scored the fastest goal of the tournament with a spectacular 25-metre strike just over a minute into the game.

Turkish supporters were left to ponder what might have been had Mert Muldur’s header from a free-kick in the 35th minute bounced in off the crossbar instead of rebounding off the post. That was Turkey’s closest opportunity, despite continued efforts from players such as Baris Yilmaz, Can Uzun, and Merih Demiral, who all failed to convert promising chances.

Arda Guler, the 21-year-old rising star of Turkish football, expressed his regret to the nation after the match.

“We tried very hard but it didn’t work. But we should have scored some goals,” he said. “We should have won these games ... Everybody’s sad, everybody’s crying.”

From Euro 2024 Quarter-Finalists to World Cup Disappointment

The outcome was a dramatic fall for a team that had impressed with an adventurous run to the Euro 2024 quarter-finals. This so-called golden generation, led by young talents like Guler and Kenan Yildiz, had appeared poised to make a significant impact on the world stage. Instead, Turkey’s players and coaching staff now face intense scrutiny at home ahead of their final group match against the USA, who have already secured progression to the last 32.

Paraguay’s Resilience and Tactical Success

For Paraguay, the victory represented a triumph for perseverance following a poor performance against the USA. Coach Gustavo Alfaro had confidence in his pragmatic squad to rebound, and his decision to introduce Galarza, who did not feature in the previous match, proved decisive. After Galarza’s early goal, Paraguay relied on grit, determination, and a measure of luck to maintain their position in the tournament.

Even a red card in first-half stoppage time failed to derail the South Americans, although their challenge was complicated by the dismissal of Miguel Almiron for comments made to Muldur while covering his mouth with his hand.

Alfaro praised his players’ character following the match.

“It’s nothing about tactics or strategy here. This victory, this result is to the credit of the players,” he said.
