Tuchel Addresses Full-Back Selection Amid James Injury
England manager Thomas Tuchel has defended his full-back selection strategy following the confirmation that Reece James will miss England's upcoming World Cup group stage match against Panama on Saturday.
As reported by earlier this week, James underwent assessment by England's medical team after the goalless draw with Ghana on Tuesday, during which he reported a hamstring problem.
Tuchel confirmed that the Chelsea right-back did not travel from England's Kansas City base to New Jersey for the final Group L fixture scheduled for Saturday at 22:00 BST. Despite this, Tuchel remains optimistic about James' availability for England's potential last-32 knockout match next week.
However, sources indicate that James remains a significant doubt for the knockout stages, should England advance.
Full-Back Selection Under Scrutiny
The injuries to James and Tino Livramento—who returned home from the United States due to a calf issue—have raised questions about Tuchel's decision to bring only three recognized full-backs to the World Cup.
The three genuine full-backs selected were Djed Spence, Reece James, and Tino Livramento.
Other squad members include Nico O'Reilly, who featured at left-back for Manchester City last season but developed primarily as a midfielder at the Etihad Stadium, and Dan Burn, who has experience at left-back but is primarily a centre-back.
Tuchel's alternative options at right-back include Djed Spence and central defenders Jarell Quansah and Ezri Konsa.
"Yes, I am [happy with my options at right-back]. I selected the team, so I'm very happy with everything with the characteristic of the players and strengths that they give us.
We would love to have every single key player, we would love to have them available, it's not available – we find solutions, it's what we do. It's a tournament, we move on."
James and Livramento both have histories of injury setbacks, which has led to scrutiny over Tuchel's choice to include them in the World Cup squad.
James' Injury Status and Rehabilitation
Tuchel expressed confidence that James will return to play in the tournament if England progress beyond the group stage.
"It's a minor hamstring issue, he's not been able to train the last two days," Tuchel said.
"He's now on an accelerated rehabilitation program and we take it game by game, but we strongly believe that he will be available [during the tournament]."
Other Player Updates Ahead of Panama Match
There was more positive news regarding the fitness of Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, and Elliot Anderson, all of whom Tuchel confirmed would be available for the match against Panama.
Rice, who has a calf issue, and Anderson, recovering from a glute problem, missed training on Thursday but returned to training on Friday.
Tuchel also confirmed that Saka is ready to start after having come off the bench in England's opening two matches due to a long-term Achilles tendinitis condition.
