Simons Suffers Season-Ending ACL Injury

Tottenham Hotspur's Netherlands attacking midfielder Xavi Simons has been ruled out for the remainder of the season and the upcoming 2026 World Cup due to a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). The 23-year-old, who joined Spurs from RB Leipzig for £52 million in August 2025, sustained the injury during Tottenham's 1-0 victory over Wolves on Saturday.

Simons was carried off on a stretcher in the second half after a collision with Wolves defender Hugo Bueno. Initially, he managed to stand but subsequently collapsed, indicating the severity of the injury. Tottenham confirmed that Simons will undergo surgery in the coming weeks.

"They say life can be cruel and today it feels that way," Simons wrote on social media. "My season has come to an abrupt end and I'm just trying to process it. Honestly, I'm heartbroken. None of it makes sense."

Partial tears or ruptures of the ACL typically require a recovery period of six to nine months. Tottenham's official statement detailed the injury:

"We can confirm that Xavi Simons has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee. Xavi will undergo surgery in the coming weeks and, following that, will then begin his rehabilitation with our medical team."

Impact on Tottenham's Premier League Survival Bid

Simons' injury comes at a critical time as Tottenham fight to avoid relegation. The club currently sits 18th in the Premier League, two points adrift of safety, with only four games remaining in the season. Spurs' upcoming fixtures include matches against Aston Villa, Leeds United, Chelsea, and Everton.

Simons expressed his disappointment at missing both the club's relegation battle and the World Cup:

"All I've wanted to do is fight for my team and now the ability to do that has been snatched away from me … along with the World Cup. Representing my country this summer … just gone. It'll take time to find peace with this, but I'll continue to be the best team-mate I can be. I have no doubt that together we'll win this fight. I'll walk this path now, guided by faith, with strength, with resilience, with belief, as I count down the days to getting back out there."

Details of Simons' Season and Club Situation

Since joining Tottenham last summer, Simons has made 28 league appearances, including 19 starts. He has scored two goals and provided five assists in the Premier League this season. Despite his contributions, Simons has found it challenging to make a significant impact amid a turbulent season for Spurs, which has seen managerial changes from Thomas Frank to interim manager Igor Tudor, and most recently the appointment of Roberto de Zerbi.

Simons' injury adds to an already extensive list of absences for Tottenham. Striker Dominic Solanke also left the Wolves match with an injury, and other key players such as Ben Davies, Mohammed Kudus, Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison, Wilson Odobert, and Cristian Romero remain sidelined.

About the 2026 World Cup

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, commencing on 11 June. The Netherlands are scheduled to begin their campaign in Group F against Japan on 14 June. Simons' ACL injury means he will miss this major international tournament.
