USA Secure Last 32 Spot with Convincing Win Over Australia
In September 1996, Antonio Freeman made a significant impact in American football by scoring two touchdowns that helped the Green Bay Packers secure a notable victory against the Seattle Seahawks. Later that season, he earned the prestigious title of Super Bowl champion, the highest honor in the NFL.
Nearly 30 years later, the Freeman name is once again making headlines in Seattle, but this time in the realm of soccer. Antonio's son, Alex Freeman, scored his first World Cup goal on Friday, contributing to the USA's 2-0 victory over Australia, which guaranteed their advancement to the knockout stage.
"It's a full circle family moment," Alex Freeman said after the match.
"It shows how great the family tree is. It shows he can be great but I can be great in my own way and how amazing it is to have a dad that is successful and can mentor me to be ready for moments like these."
Antonio Freeman has been closely supporting his son throughout this World Cup journey, often seen proudly watching USA games. However, given that American football has traditionally overshadowed soccer as the most popular sport in the United States, Alex initially faced challenges in choosing to pursue soccer.
Uncertain about his father's reaction, Alex was initially encouraged to follow football by his mother and stepfather, who also served as his first soccer coach.
The 21-year-old defender revealed last year that he initially had to keep his passion for soccer private but was ultimately grateful for the encouragement to chase his dream.
"It just shows how quick stuff can change and to not doubt yourself," he added.
"Now I'm here, it shows you can never give up. Keep pushing and you never know what chance you're going to get and how you can go and make stuff happen.
"You don't know when this chance will come again."
USA Dominate Australia to Secure Last-32 Qualification
Alex Freeman grew up playing both soccer and American football, developing his skills in both sports.

The Freeman family has been celebrating this World Cup success together.

How Pochettino's Confidence in Freeman is Yielding Results
Scoring and playing for his country at a home World Cup must feel like a dream come true for Freeman, especially considering that just four years ago, such an achievement seemed unlikely.
During the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Freeman was part of the Orlando City reserves and was not yet a regular figure in the national team setup. However, the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino as USA head coach in 2024 marked a turning point.
The former Tottenham manager focused on building a youthful squad for the tournament, with Freeman becoming a key player in this strategy. He received his first international call-up last year and has since made rapid progress, featuring prominently in the Gold Cup and now being a regular starter at the World Cup.
"I want to give the credit to the Orlando club and the coaching staff," Pochettino said.
"If you don't have the support of the coaches at Orlando and you can't build that relationship and trust, it is difficult based on just some clips.
This is one example of how the people deserve the credit and of course so does the player.
He has an amazing profile, he wants to learn, he always listens. He is a player you really enjoy being with him, not just coaching but is a lovely guy also. He has the potential to be one of the best players in his position in the world."
From 'Diamond's Little Brother' to 'America's Little Brother'
Freeman has gained popularity not only on the field but also among younger fans on social media.
This surge in attention followed a viral TikTok post by his stepsister, Diamond Spaulding, just before the USA's opening match against Paraguay. On her way to a fan festival in Houston, Diamond responded to a post unaware of the World Cup by saying, "My lil brother playing for the US so cheer for #16."
After Freeman assisted in the USA's 4-1 victory over Paraguay, the post gained widespread attention, with many praising "Diamond's Little Brother."
The nickname resurfaced on social media following Freeman's goal against Australia, with some fans expanding on it.
"Go Alex !!! We're hyped about America's Little Brother!!" wrote one user on X.
For a player who once doubted his prospects in soccer within a country dominated by American football, Freeman is now not only establishing his own legacy but also attracting a new generation of fans to the sport.
"It shows how I have made it in my way," Freeman said after Friday's game.
"I've worked my whole life to be able to get to this moment, to sing the national anthem in front of a home crowd. It just makes me so happy."
