Potential Delay for Championship Play-Off Final Amid Spygate Investigation
The Championship play-off final scheduled for Saturday 23 May may be postponed as the English Football League (EFL) investigates the Spygate controversy involving finalists Southampton.
An Independent Disciplinary Commission is set to conduct a hearing on or before Tuesday 19 May.
Southampton have been charged by the EFL for allegedly breaching regulations by observing a Middlesbrough training session prior to last Saturday's semi-final first leg at the Riverside Stadium.
Southampton are set to compete against Hull City in the play-off final, which determines promotion to the Premier League for the upcoming season.
While the EFL has cautioned supporters about possible fixture changes, preparations continue on the assumption that the final will proceed as scheduled, with a kick-off time of 16:30 BST.
In the event that the match requires rescheduling due to the hearing's outcome or any ensuing appeals, the EFL has indicated it possesses a
"number of contingency plans"to accommodate such changes.
Wembley Stadium Scheduling Constraints
The Championship play-off final is the first of three play-off finals to be held over three consecutive days at Wembley Stadium, with the League One and League Two finals planned for Sunday and Monday, respectively.
Wembley is fully booked the following weekend, hosting the Rugby League Challenge Cup final on 30 May and the Women's FA Cup final on 31 May.
Additionally, a major music event is scheduled at the stadium on Saturday 6 June, further limiting available dates for rescheduling.
