Sophie Ingle Approaches 150th Wales Cap

Sophie Ingle, who earned her first cap for Wales as a teenager in 2009, is set to reach a significant milestone by winning her 150th cap in Saturday's Women's World Cup qualifier against Albania. She regards representing Wales as the pinnacle of her football career, surpassing her achievements at club level.

Wales aims to replicate their recent 4-0 victory over Albania as they strive to advance closer to qualification for the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil.

At 34 years old, Ingle will become only the second player to reach 150 appearances for Wales. Her club career includes five Women's Super League titles, three FA Cups, two League Cups, and participation in the 2021 Champions League final.

"Playing for Wales is up there and probably will be the best thing I've ever done in my career," Ingle said. "Obviously at club level, winning league titles and FA Cups is great, but there's no better feeling than putting on the Welsh shirt and playing with this bunch of girls."

Match Details and Broadcast Information

The match will take place on Saturday, 18 April at 17:00 BST. Live coverage will be available on BBC Two Wales and from 16:45 BST, with radio commentary on via BBC Radio Wales and BBC Radio Cymru. Text commentary and match highlights will be accessible on the website and app.

Ingle's Fitness and Career Prospects

After transferring to Bristol City last summer following seven years at Chelsea, Ingle feels as fit as ever, having recovered from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury that sidelined her for the entire 2024-25 club season. She plays both as a midfielder and defender.

Ingle is approaching Jess Fishlock's Welsh record of 166 caps. Helen Ward, another Wales legend, recently suggested Ingle could reach 200 caps.

Responding to Ward's suggestion, Ingle said: "Oh wow, I don't know... that's a long way off I think. We probably only play eight, nine, 10 games a year, so I'll be 40 by then. I'm not sure, I'm just focusing on the games coming up and obviously our main target is the World Cup."

Tributes from Wales Head Coach Rhian Wilkinson

Rhian Wilkinson, who earned 183 caps for Canada during her playing career, praised Ingle after confirming she will start in the match against Albania. Wilkinson highlighted Ingle's strong performances since returning from her ACL injury, including a role at Euro 2025.

Wilkinson said: "Well she is hardly crawling. Age is a measure, right - we use it a lot in football. But performance and what you are able to achieve in physical outputs, as well as just the output in the game, would make Sophie one of our top performers. Wherever she is in her career will be her choice, but I hope as a coach that all my best players keep playing for as long as possible."

Wales' Group B1 Campaign and Upcoming Challenges

Wales seeks their third victory in four games in Group B1 to maintain pressure on the Czech Republic for the top spot. Although there is no automatic qualification route for Wales as they compete in League B, finishing first would provide a more favorable draw in the play-offs later this year.

Wales began the campaign with a last-minute draw in the Czech Republic, followed by a 6-1 win over Montenegro and a 4-0 win over Albania in Wrexham.

The Czech Republic recorded a 5-1 win in Albania and a 5-0 home victory over Montenegro. Consequently, the group winner will likely be decided in the final match in June when Wales host the Czechs. Teams level on points are initially separated by head-to-head results.

Ingle stated: "We have to get three points [against Albania] and then we have to go into the June camp and get two wins."

Wales head coach Wilkinson anticipates a tougher match in Albania compared to the previous encounter in Wrexham, partly due to warmer weather conditions that required factor 50 sun cream during training on Friday.

Wilkinson said: "It's a little bit hotter here than in Wrexham. But I was really pleased with the performance [on Tuesday] because what we have been asking for, they are working hard to deliver. I hope we are able to put in back-to-back performances like that."
