Son Heung-min Named in South Korea's World Cup Squad
Son Heung-min, former Tottenham Hotspur forward and current captain of South Korea, has been selected for his fourth World Cup. The 33-year-old, who left Spurs last year, now plays for Major League Soccer club Los Angeles FC.
South Korea will begin their World Cup campaign against the Czech Republic on 12 June. They will then face co-hosts Mexico on 19 June, with both matches taking place in Guadalajara. The group stage will conclude with a match against South Africa on 25 June in Monterrey.
Coach Hong Myung-bo has named an experienced squad that includes Wolves forward Hwang Hee-chan and several British-based midfielders: Bae Jun-ho (Stoke City), Paik Seung-ho (Birmingham), Yang Hyun-jun (Celtic), and Eom Ji-sung (Swansea).
The squad also features Paris St-Germain midfielder Lee Kang-in, Bayern Munich defender Kim Min-jae, and Jens Castrop of Borussia Monchengladbach. Castrop is notable for being the first player with dual heritage to be selected for a South Korea World Cup squad. Born to a German father and Korean mother, Castrop previously represented Germany at youth levels but has played five times for South Korea since switching allegiance last year.
