Seamus Coleman to End Everton Playing Career

Seamus Coleman has announced that he will conclude his playing career at Everton at the end of the current season, coinciding with the expiration of his contract after 17 years with the club.

The 37-year-old full-back has been offered a coaching position within the Everton organization, but he has stated that he will make a decision regarding his future during the summer.

Career Overview and Achievements

The Republic of Ireland international transferred to Everton from Irish club Sligo Rovers in January 2009 for a transfer fee of £60,000. He was appointed club captain in 2019.

In 2024, Coleman set a new club record for Premier League appearances, surpassing former goalkeeper Tim Howard's previous record of 354 matches.

His current Premier League record stands at 372 appearances, during which he has scored 22 goals and provided 24 assists.

"After more than 17 years at this great football club, I've decided this season will be my last as a player here," said Coleman.

Coleman's final home appearance is scheduled for the match against Sunderland on Sunday.

The £60,000 Signing Who Became an Everton Legend

In recent seasons, Coleman has faced injury challenges, limiting his participation to just three Premier League appearances this season. Notably, in November, he started a match but was substituted after only 10 minutes due to injury.

If he participates in the upcoming game against Sunderland, he will rank ninth on Everton's all-time appearances list with 434 appearances across all competitions, surpassing club legends Dixie Dean and Leon Osman.

Coaching Credentials and Interim Management

Coleman holds a UEFA B License coaching badge, authorizing him to coach amateur teams, youth teams up to age 16, and serve as an assistant coach.

In early 2025, following the dismissal of former Everton manager Sean Dyche, Coleman served as interim first-team manager alongside former teammate Leighton Baines for an FA Cup match against Peterborough United.

Captaincy and Personal Reflections

Having captained Everton 140 times, Coleman expressed his gratitude towards the club and its supporters.

"I want to thank the fans for their unbelievable support. You've helped me in more ways than you could imagine.
I live in the city - I see you all daily - and I've taken your love of the football club back into the dressing room to explain to the lads how much Everton means to the people.
I also thank my managers, team-mates and all the staff. They've seen me happy, sad, angry, emotional, but the greater cause has always been Everton.
Thank you for making me a better captain and team-mate. It's an incredible football club with incredible people."
