Additionally, a potential red card incident involving Lucas Digne's challenge on Jacob Murphy was overlooked, as was a possible offside against Dan Burn during Newcastle's equalising goal.
However, the most contentious decision involved a handball call against Villa full-back Lucas Digne. Although Digne was positioned two yards inside the penalty area, the officials judged the handball to have occurred a yard outside the box, resulting in a free-kick rather than a penalty. Newcastle capitalised on this free-kick, with Sandro Tonali scoring the equaliser in the 63rd minute.
