Qatar's Challenging Preparations
The 2022 World Cup hosts, Qatar, faced disruptions in their preparations for the 2026 tournament due to the US-Iran conflict, which led to the cancellation of key friendly matches against Serbia and reigning champions Argentina in March. Julen Lopetegui, appointed as head coach in May 2025, aimed to maximize playing time with his squad amid these setbacks. However, concerns arose as the team had secured only one victory in 11 matches under the former Spain and Real Madrid manager prior to the warm-up games.
Despite these difficulties, Lopetegui successfully guided Qatar to the World Cup finals, though qualification was narrowly achieved. The Maroons concluded fourth in a six-team qualifying group but leveraged home advantage and a favorable schedule to draw 0-0 with Oman and secure a 2-1 win over the UAE, ensuring their place in the tournament.
Switzerland's Strong Qualification Campaign
Swiss supporters have multiple reasons for optimism heading into the tournament. Switzerland comfortably topped their qualifying group, finishing ahead of Kosovo, Slovenia, and Sweden by winning four matches and drawing two. The squad features a balanced mix of experienced players such as Granit Xhaka, Manuel Akanji, and Ricardo Rodriguez, alongside emerging talents including Dan Ndoye, Fabian Rieder, and Johan Manzambi.
Additionally, the Swiss team has largely avoided injury setbacks. Notably, Burnley striker Zeki Amdouni appears to have successfully recovered from an anterior cruciate ligament injury, strengthening the squad's options.
Context and Tournament Outlook
The expanded format of the tournament presents a fresh challenge. Both Qatar and Switzerland are familiar with the World Cup stage, having participated in the 2022 finals, with Qatar as hosts. Switzerland is a regular qualifier, having appeared 12 times, though their best performance remains reaching the quarter-finals in 1954 when they hosted the event.
Qatar enters the tournament as Asian champions, coached by the well-known Premier League figure Julen Lopetegui. Switzerland qualified with ease, remaining unbeaten at the top of their group. The two teams are set to face each other in the San Francisco Bay Area.
