Newcastle Rejects Tottenham's Offer for Tonali
Newcastle United have declined a bid from Tottenham Hotspur for midfielder Sandro Tonali. The offer, reportedly around £80 million, was turned down earlier this week.
previously reported that Spurs manager Roberto de Zerbi has long admired Tonali and that the club was assessing the financial feasibility of acquiring the 26-year-old Italian international.
However, Newcastle, confident in their position, rejected the initial proposal and are seeking a fee closer to £100 million. This valuation is supported by interest from other top clubs, including Manchester City and Arsenal, who are monitoring the situation.
Newcastle recently completed the sale of Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, but the club's chief executive, David Hopkinson, has emphasized their firm stance on transfer negotiations.
"We will only trade players on our terms," Hopkinson stated.
Tonali is contracted to Newcastle until 2030, having signed a new deal during a 10-month betting ban as a demonstration of the club's continued faith in him.
The current transfer market conditions may favor Newcastle if a bidding war develops, especially considering the high valuations of midfielders elsewhere.
For example, Manchester City had a second bid of approximately £120 million rejected by Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson, while relegated West Ham United are demanding up to £80 million for Mateus Fernandes.
