Decisive Free from Niall Morgan Sends Tyrone Through

Niall Morgan’s crucial two-point free in the dying moments secured a narrow victory for Tyrone over Mayo, with a final score of 0-22 to 1-18 at Healy Park. This win guarantees Tyrone a place in the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship quarter-finals.

Darren McCurry, who entered the game as a second-half substitute, contributed five vital points, helping Tyrone maintain parity during a match that saw the teams level on ten occasions.

Before the match began, Tyrone received a boost with the inclusion of key forward Darragh Canavan among the substitutes.

With this result, Tyrone advances to join Louth, Cork, and Galway in the quarter-finals scheduled in two weeks. Mayo, meanwhile, will compete in round three next weekend against one of Dublin, Meath, Kerry, or Monaghan.

Tight and Tense Battle

The first half was marked by intense competition, with the teams drawing level seven times. At the 15-minute mark, the score was tied at 4-4, with Enda Hession and Ronan Cassidy leading the scoring for Mayo and Tyrone respectively.

Both sides had opportunities to score goals midway through the half. Mayo’s Kobe McDonald set up Jordan Flynn for a breakaway, but Flynn’s shot was saved by an alert Niall Morgan.

Tyrone quickly countered, with Eoin McElholm breaking through the Mayo defense, only to be dispossessed by Eoin McGreal at a critical moment.

Tyrone struggled with accuracy, registering six wides in the first half, including attempts from Ethan Jordan and Michael McKernan from close range.

Mayo began to gain momentum as McDonald, Paddy Durcan, and Ryan O'Donaghue scored three consecutive points.

Approaching halftime, Mayo appeared poised to lead, but Sam Callinan’s shot was blocked by Tyrone’s Peter Teague.

In the final moments before the break, Tyrone pushed forward. McKernan’s shot seemed to fall short but was skillfully punched over the bar by Conn Kilpatrick, leaving the teams level at 8-8 as the halftime whistle sounded.

Morgan Kicks the Decisive Score

The second half continued in a similarly close fashion. Jack Carney’s two-pointer gave Mayo a slight edge before McCurry’s introduction shifted momentum. His five points helped Tyrone establish a three-point lead midway through the half.

Mayo responded strongly when Morgan’s poor kick-out allowed Darragh Beirne to break through and score a goal in the 54th minute, shortly after McDonald’s two-pointer had put Mayo two points ahead.

The closing stages were filled with drama. Morgan successfully converted a 45 to level the game for the tenth time. Shortly after, Callinan scored a point with two minutes remaining.

Tyrone earned a free from two-point range in front of the stand, which Morgan converted to secure the winning margin. Aidan O'Shea’s late attempt for Mayo fell short.

Tyrone will now enjoy a week’s rest before the All-Ireland quarter-finals, while Mayo prepares for Round Three, facing one of the winners from the upcoming round 2B fixtures.
