O'Neill Chooses Northern Ireland Over Permanent Blackburn Role

Michael O'Neill has decided not to accept the permanent managerial position at Blackburn Rovers, opting instead to continue his role as the Northern Ireland national team manager.

Appointed as Blackburn's interim manager in February, O'Neill was set to lead the club until the end of the 2025-26 season while simultaneously managing Northern Ireland.

During his interim tenure, the 56-year-old oversaw 15 matches, achieving five wins, five draws, and five losses. Under his guidance, Blackburn finished 20th in the Championship, successfully avoiding relegation.

Throughout his time balancing both roles, O'Neill consistently stated that maintaining both positions permanently would be untenable, necessitating a choice between the two.

Blackburn Rovers issued a statement confirming the decision:

"Following discussions with the club, Michael has decided to continue his long-term commitment to his role as Northern Ireland head coach, with a focus on leading the national team towards qualification for the Uefa European Championships in 2028,"

O'Neill's tenure with Northern Ireland spans two periods, during which he has recorded 38 wins, 23 draws, and 43 defeats.

His current objective is to guide Northern Ireland to their first UEFA European Championship appearance since 2016, when he previously led the team to the finals.

Reflecting on his time at Blackburn, O'Neill stated:

"Blackburn Rovers is a historic football club with a proud tradition and passionate supporters. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working with the players, staff and everyone around the club."
"After careful consideration, I have decided that my long-term focus must remain with Northern Ireland and the journey towards the European Championship campaign ahead. I would like to thank the owners, board, staff, players and supporters for the welcome and support shown to me during my time at the club."
