Mexico Players Face World Cup Training Camp Ultimatum
Mexico coach Javier Aguirre is conducting the pre-World Cup training camp at the Mexican Football Federation's High-Performance Centre located in Mexico City.
The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) has issued a strict directive to Liga MX domestic players, stating that those who do not attend the scheduled training camp and instead remain with their clubs will be excluded from Mexico's World Cup squad.
The camp is set to begin on Wednesday, 6 May, and is scheduled outside of FIFA's official international window. This timing conflicts with the Liga MX play-offs in Mexico's top football division as well as Concacaf Champions Cup matches.
A deadline has been established for player attendance at 8pm local time (03:00 BST on Thursday, 7 May).
Last week, the FMF announced the 20 Liga MX players selected by coach Javier Aguirre to participate in the camp in Mexico City. Among these, 12 players are assured a place in the World Cup squad.
"All players must report to the High Performance Centre in Mexico City," the FMF stated.
"On the coaching staff's instructions, any player who fails to attend the training camp today will be excluded from the World Cup."
Mexico, co-hosting this summer's World Cup alongside the United States and Canada, plans to announce its final squad on 1 June.
As part of their preparations, Mexico will play friendly matches against Ghana on 22 May, Australia on 31 May, and Serbia on 4 June. Their World Cup campaign begins against South Africa at Estadio Azteca on 11 June.
Club Conflicts and Player Releases
On Wednesday, Toluca is scheduled to face Major League Soccer (MLS) side Los Angeles FC in the second leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup semi-finals. Meanwhile, Chivas de Guadalajara is preparing for their Liga MX play-off quarter-final on Sunday.
On Tuesday, Toluca formally requested that the FMF release forward Alexis Vega and left-back Jesus Gallardo from the training camp to allow them to participate in the Champions Cup semi-final. This request caused discontent among rival club Chivas, which had already released five players to the camp.
In response, Chivas president Amaury Vergara recalled goalkeeper Raul Rangel, midfielder Luis Romo, United States-born midfielder Brian Gutierrez, winger Roberto Alvarado, and forward Armando Gonzalez from the camp.
Toluca's request to retain players in order to prioritize their Champions Cup semi-final—where they currently trail 2-1 on aggregate after the first leg—was perceived as a violation of the agreement established with Liga MX clubs.
Vergara wrote on X: "Agreements are valid only when all parties respect them. I instructed the Sports Directorate that our players report tomorrow at the club's facilities."
Chivas suffered a 3-1 defeat to Tigres in the first leg of the play-off quarter-final last weekend.
