Manchester United in Advanced Talks for Ederson

Manchester United are reportedly in advanced negotiations to sign Brazil midfielder Ederson from Atalanta as their first acquisition of the summer transfer window.

According to multiple sources cited by , the clubs are close to agreeing on a transfer fee of 48 million euros (£41.6 million) for the 26-year-old player.

Senior officials at Manchester United have downplayed the rumors, stating that no formal agreement has yet been reached. Ederson currently has one year remaining on his contract with Atalanta.

On the same day the club announced third-quarter profits of £37.7 million for the nine months ending 31 March, chief executive Omar Berrada expressed optimism about the club's progress.

"I am very positive about the club's progress," said Berrada.

The club is eager to build upon their unexpected third-place finish in the Premier League under new head coach Michael Carrick.

Financial Position and Transfer Strategy

Manchester United still have a significant amount of outstanding transfer fees, which constitute the majority of the £482 million recorded under 'trade and other payables', highlighting the financial challenges the club faces.

Despite this, the club is determined to remain competitive in the transfer market while avoiding the pitfalls of offering costly long-term contracts, a strategy they have employed in previous transfer windows.

Midfield Reinforcements a Priority

Strengthening the central midfield is a key focus for United this summer following the departure of Casemiro and uncertainty surrounding Manuel Ugarte's future at the club.

The club aims to secure two or possibly three new midfield signings. However, their first-choice target, Elliot Anderson, reportedly prefers a move to Manchester City.

While it is common for United to engage with multiple targets before finalizing a deal, they appear to be moving quickly to secure Ederson, who has earned three full caps for Brazil but was not selected for the recent World Cup squad.

Atletico Madrid had shown interest in Ederson, who has spent the last four and a half years playing in Serie A, initially with Salernitana. However, Atletico have opted to pursue Wolves' Joao Gomes instead.

Another potential target, Mateus Fernandes, is expected to be sold by West Ham this summer as the club adjusts to the financial impact of relegation to the Championship.

Manchester United had also been interested in Brighton's Carlos Baleba last summer but would now seek to acquire the Cameroon international at a significantly reduced price following a less impressive season.

Managerial Changes and Financial Details

Manchester United have confirmed that dismissing former manager Ruben Amorim cost the club £16.7 million.

Amorim, who was appointed from Sporting less than 14 months prior for a fee of £11 million, was sacked in January after a series of poor results and disagreements with director of football Jason Wilcox regarding the team's playing style.

Michael Carrick took over as caretaker manager and won 12 of his 17 games, guiding United to a third-place finish in a season where the club initially targeted a Europa League spot. Carrick has since been appointed as the permanent head coach.

The club also disclosed borrowings of £262.5 million on a revolving credit facility as of 31 March. Alongside a £490.1 million ($650 million) debt stemming from the Glazer family's takeover in 2005 and outstanding transfer fees, Manchester United's total debt across these three main categories remains just under £1.3 billion.

Despite the financial burdens, Berrada remains confident about the club's trajectory both on and off the pitch.

"The continuing positive impact of our business transformation initiatives," he said, referring to measures that included two rounds of redundancies.

Additionally, the club confirmed ongoing work behind the scenes on its ambitious plan to develop a new 100,000-seater stadium.

Player Statistics

Ederson has made 180 appearances for Atalanta, scoring 16 goals during his tenure with the club.
