Enzo Maresca Signs Three-Year Deal with Manchester City
Enzo Maresca (middle) has signed a three-year contract with Manchester City, officially becoming the club's new head coach.
Chelsea have announced that Maresca will pay them compensation following his confirmation as Manchester City's new manager.
The 46-year-old former Chelsea manager succeeds Pep Guardiola, who stepped down in May after a highly successful 10-year tenure at City.
The appointment was delayed due to negotiations between Chelsea and Manchester City regarding a compensation package, which includes an undisclosed fee for the Italian coach. According to a source cited by , Manchester City is paying Chelsea approximately £17 million.
This compensation arrangement is separate from the agreement Chelsea say they have reached with Maresca himself, though has yet to verify those details.
Maresca departed Chelsea in January after a run of one win in seven Premier League matches.
Chelsea's statement at the time indicated that the decision was mutual, with both Maresca and the club's board agreeing that "a change gives the team the best chance of getting the season back on track."
However, Maresca has now confirmed that he tendered his resignation at Stamford Bridge and acknowledged that this "opened a path" for him to join Manchester City.
In a statement, Chelsea described Maresca's resignation as a "decision not to continue fulfilling his responsibilities" and said they have reached a confidential agreement with the Italian regarding compensation due to the club.
Maresca, who served as Guardiola's assistant during Manchester City's 2022-23 Treble-winning season, has issued an apology to Chelsea for how he left the club.
"The decision was only mine," Maresca wrote on Instagram.
"I recognise that my departure from Chelsea in the middle of the season caused disruption for the club and I apologise for that. It was neither my intention nor my wish."
Maresca Confirmed as Guardiola’s Successor at Manchester City
Following the announcement, discussions have emerged regarding what success would look like for Maresca in his first season at City.
Analysis - Maresca’s Departure Impacted Chelsea’s Season
While Maresca’s managerial abilities are respected at Chelsea, his departure occurred under difficult circumstances.
His resignation, which he admits "opened a path" for his move to Manchester City, negatively affected Chelsea’s season. It contributed to a turbulent campaign where the club finished 10th in the Premier League, dismissed another manager, and suffered significant financial losses due to reduced television revenue.
This situation led to a prolonged legal dispute that has only recently been resolved, enabling all parties to move forward.
Despite the challenges, Chelsea’s first season under owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital remains their most successful since the acquisition. The club qualified for the Champions League for the first time in four years and secured their first trophies under the new ownership by winning the Club World Cup and the Conference League.
Meanwhile, Manchester City have appointed Chelsea’s most highly regarded manager since Thomas Tuchel, who also has Pep Guardiola’s endorsement, having worked as his assistant during the Treble-winning campaign.
