O'Sullivan Departs Liverpool for Gotham FC

Denise O'Sullivan, Liverpool's record signing, has left the club just six months after her arrival. The 32-year-old midfielder has joined Gotham FC, a New York-based team competing in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), on an initial one-year loan deal that includes an obligation to buy.

O'Sullivan, who represents the Republic of Ireland internationally, joined Liverpool in January for a transfer fee of £300,000. Since her arrival, she has been a key player for the club.

The departure of O'Sullivan is a significant setback for Liverpool, who are currently in the process of rebuilding following a disappointing 2025-26 season.

"I'm incredibly excited to join Gotham FC and return to the NWSL," O'Sullivan said. "This club has established itself as one of the top teams in the world with an incredible culture and ambition to compete for every trophy. I can't wait to meet my team-mates, get to work and do everything I can to help this club continue its success."

During her tenure at Liverpool, O'Sullivan made 13 appearances across all competitions, including nine league matches. She also contributed to Gareth Taylor's squad reaching the Women's FA Cup semi-finals.

According to sources cited by , Liverpool is expected to receive a substantial transfer fee as part of the deal.

O'Sullivan's decision to leave Liverpool is understood to be personal. She previously spent nine seasons playing in the United States with North Carolina Courage, where she made over 150 appearances and served as team captain.

On the international stage, O'Sullivan is highly experienced, having earned 132 caps for the Republic of Ireland. She played a pivotal role in Ireland's Women's World Cup qualifying campaign earlier this year.

In related transfer news, Liverpool recently signed England goalkeeper Khiara Keating from Manchester City on Monday.
