Lightning Halts Pre-World Cup Friendly in Texas

Fans at the Q2 Stadium in Austin were instructed to seek shelter due to extreme weather conditions during the Saudi Arabia versus Puerto Rico warm-up match ahead of the World Cup.

The game was suspended in the 21st minute as thunderstorms and lightning strikes forced players off the field. Multiple lightning strikes were recorded before the match resumed nearly two hours later, with Saudi Arabia ultimately securing a 3-0 victory.

The 2026 World Cup, hosted jointly by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, is scheduled to begin on 11 June. Several host cities are experiencing peak thunderstorm season, prompting strict safety protocols. If lightning is detected within eight miles of a stadium, play is halted and a mandatory 30-minute countdown begins. This countdown resets to 30 minutes each time lightning is detected within the specified distance.

Although Q2 Stadium will not host any World Cup matches, Texas will feature two venues during the tournament. Houston Stadium will host seven matches, while Dallas Stadium is set to host nine, including England’s group stage match against Croatia.

Last year’s Club World Cup in the US experienced similar weather disruptions. Chelsea’s last-16 match against Benfica in Charlotte lasted four hours and 39 minutes due to multiple stoppages caused by summer thunderstorms.

Heat is also a concern for the upcoming World Cup. Researchers have warned that temperatures at 14 of the 16 stadiums could reach dangerous levels during the tournament.

Saudi Arabia’s World Cup Preparations

Saudi Arabia will play their final warm-up match against Senegal on Wednesday before beginning their World Cup campaign against Uruguay at Miami Stadium on 15 June. Their Group H schedule also includes matches against Spain in Atlanta on 21 June and Cape Verde in Houston on 27 June.
