Passion for Football Manager Leads to Real-Life Adventure

An avid video game enthusiast journeyed over 1,000 miles to witness his cherished football club in person on Saturday, fulfilling a long-held dream.

Andrea Lai, an Italian from Imola, has been engaged with the Football Manager series for nearly two decades. During this time, he randomly selected Coleraine Football Club as his team to manage within the game.

Last week, Lai made the trip from Italy to Northern Ireland to attend Coleraine's final league match of the season. The team secured second place by narrowly defeating Glentoran, earning a coveted spot in European competition.

He first began managing Coleraine virtually seven years ago and has since accumulated numerous virtual trophies with the club.

Personal Journey and Connection to Coleraine

Lai, 39, supports both Bologna and Coleraine in real life. Traveling alone, he described his experience in Northern Ireland as "wonderful."

"Astonishing - it was enormous to me because for many years I was considering coming, but it was too far,"

"I decided to come by myself. I enjoyed some of the great landscapes in Northern Ireland, but the main reason, really, it was the Saturday match against Glentoran, and then I built my trip based on it."

His affection for Coleraine began when he randomly chose the club in the game, which has since transitioned from semi-professional to professional status.

"I start playing with this non-pro team and I totally fell in love for it. The part-time contract, all the players, and bringing them to success, winning the premiership, winning the Irish Cup, and bringing Coleraine in the European competition was awesome."

His interest extended beyond the virtual realm as he began following Coleraine in real life and purchasing merchandise from the club's online shop.

Through these interactions, Lai connected with individuals involved in the club and decided last month to attend the season's final league game.

Meeting the Team and Celebrating Success

Coleraine's triumph secured European football for the first time since 2022, a milestone that delighted Lai.

He met players and staff, including hat-trick scorer Will Patching and the club's real-life manager, Ruaidhri Higgins.

"I cannot miss this kind of opportunity to watch the club live again,"

"I'm already looking forward to our next year to come."

Lai noted that he was unable to attend previous European matches held in San Marino and Slovenia but is eager to support the team in future fixtures.

Looking Ahead to the Irish Cup Final

As Coleraine prepare to face Dungannon Swifts in the Irish Cup final this weekend, Lai expressed optimism about their chances.

"I think the club have a very good possibility to win the game,"

He plans to follow the match from Italy and joked about being "probably the very first Italian supporter" of the club.

"I will find a way to follow the game, to follow Coleraine even out in Italy."

"I will keep the memories made on my trip all lifelong."
