Manager’s Future Confirmed After Months of Speculation

Andoni Iraola has announced he will depart Bournemouth when his contract concludes at the end of the current season. The 43-year-old manager is anticipated to explore new opportunities this summer, with several Premier League vacancies potentially available.

His exit may also pave the way for a return to his boyhood club, Athletic Bilbao, although Edin Terzic, the former Borussia Dortmund head coach, is considered the leading candidate to replace Ernesto Valverde there.

Communication and Player Notification

Iraola’s future had been a subject of discussion for several months. He had kept his coaching staff uninformed until deciding to conclude his tenure at Bournemouth after three seasons. The club’s players were informed of his impending departure following a training session on Tuesday afternoon.

Throughout the past 15 months, Iraola maintained ongoing discussions with Bournemouth’s director of football, Tiago Pinto, and technical director, Simon Francis, without committing to an extension.

Club’s Position and Succession Planning

Bournemouth, who recently secured a victory against Arsenal and are aiming for their best-ever Premier League finish, initially hoped to retain Iraola, believing there was potential for further progress under his leadership next season. However, as negotiations extended, the club gradually accepted the likelihood of his departure. All parties agreed on the necessity of clarity before the season’s conclusion, prompting Bournemouth to expedite the search for Iraola’s successor.

Managerial Achievements and Player Sales

Iraola has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most respected managers. Last season, he guided Bournemouth to a record points total and matched the ninth-place finish previously achieved by Eddie Howe in the 2016-17 season. This summer, Iraola successfully managed the integration of key player sales, including Dean Huijsen, Illia Zabarnyi, Milos Kerkez, Dango Ouattara, and Antoine Semenyo (sold midway through the season), generating combined fees exceeding £250 million.

Connection to Athletic Bilbao

Having made 510 appearances for Athletic Bilbao, Iraola is linked to the club’s ongoing search for a successor to Valverde. He has openly acknowledged his support for the La Liga team but has previously indicated a preference to preserve his legacy there following a 12-year playing career.

Interest from Other Clubs

Crystal Palace expressed admiration for Iraola after Oliver Glasner announced his departure from Selhurst Park at the end of the season in January. Nevertheless, Iraola is expected to attract attention from larger clubs.

Reflection on His Tenure

Towards the end of the previous campaign, Iraola suggested that the current season would be his last at Bournemouth.

“Sometimes there is a moment after some seasons where you feel maybe the message does not go the same way to the players in the same way,”
he said.
“Normally managers like to feel these things and make decisions according to the moment.”

Upcoming Fixture

Bournemouth’s next match is against Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Saturday. Notably, Howe has yet to secure a victory over his former club since becoming Newcastle’s manager.
