Alphonso Davies' Injury and World Cup Preparation

Bayern Munich full-back Alphonso Davies has been called up for co-hosts Canada's final training camp ahead of the World Cup, despite ongoing injury concerns.

Davies, 25, sustained a hamstring injury during Bayern's Champions League semi-final second leg against Paris St-Germain on 6 May. At the time, the German club indicated he was expected to be sidelined "for several weeks." The injury contributed to a season in which Davies made only 13 Bundesliga appearances, a campaign significantly affected by various injuries.

Despite these setbacks, the Canada captain is among the 32 players invited to a training camp in Charlotte, North Carolina this week. Head coach Jesse Marsch is set to announce the 26-man World Cup squad on Friday.

Canada Soccer has stated it is coordinating with clubs and medical teams concerning player fitness and ongoing competitions but has not clarified whether Davies will participate in the camp or join the squad at a later date.

"These are the final days before we announce the squad that will represent Canada at a home World Cup, and the excitement in this group is real," Canada boss Marsch said in a statement.

"We feel the momentum building across our country and we are calm, focused, and ready for this moment."

Davies' Recent International Appearances and Injuries

Davies last represented Canada in a match against the United States in March of the previous year, during which he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. He also missed the March 2026 friendlies against Iceland and Tunisia due to a hamstring strain.

He was part of Canada's squad for the 2022 World Cup and scored in the group stage match, which ended in a 4-1 defeat to eventual semi-finalists Croatia.

Canada's Upcoming Matches

Canada is scheduled to host Uzbekistan in a friendly match in Edmonton on 1 June, followed by a game against the Republic of Ireland in Montreal on 5 June.

The team will commence their home World Cup campaign against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Toronto on 12 June. Subsequent group stage matches will be against Qatar and Switzerland in Vancouver.
