Heart of Midlothian v Hibernian highlights
Heart of Midlothian secured another late derby victory with Tomas Magnusson's 88th-minute goal against Hibernian at Tynecastle on Tuesday. The goal ignited celebrations among the fans and manager Derek McInnes, who shared a moment of joy with a ballboy.
This late winner adds further credibility to Hearts' title challenge, a prospect that seemed unlikely at the start of the season. Throughout the campaign, Hearts have repeatedly produced decisive moments in the final minutes, fueling belief among supporters.
This resilience is characteristic of champions—the ability to salvage wins from difficult situations and secure three points when it matters most. Both Celtic and Rangers have demonstrated this trait over the years, with Celtic doing so recently in the Scottish Cup. Now, Hearts are proving they possess the same quality.
After last week's defeat away to St Mirren and with both Old Firm teams improving under new management, Hearts particularly needed this result. A loss to Hibs would have allowed Rangers to overtake them at the top of the table with a win at Motherwell on Tuesday.
Instead, with 12 games remaining, McInnes' side, who have led since September, hold a six-point advantage over Danny Rohl's Rangers as they prepare for a challenging away fixture against the fourth-placed team. Reigning champions Celtic trail a further three points behind, albeit with an additional game in hand.
Evidence Builds Against Old Firm Dominance
Hearts' habit of late winning goals was evident early in the season. In the second round of fixtures, Stuart Findlay scored a late winner at Tannadice to overturn a 2-1 deficit against Dundee United, securing all three points for Hearts.
They repeated this feat at the end of August against Livingston, when Alexandros Kyziridis scored at Almondvale to clinch a 2-1 victory. Craig Halkett also scored a 91st-minute goal in the first derby of the season, sliding in to connect with a Sabah Kerjota cross.
The team's resilience extends beyond scoring. For example, Craig Gordon made a crucial save away to Dundee while Hearts were down to ten men after goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow’s red card. Gordon denied Emile Acquah’s header, preserving a vital 1-0 win.
Statistically, Hearts have scored 12 goals in the last 15 minutes of league matches this season, second only to Rangers.
"What we've got in abundance is a desire to make the game go our way," head coach McInnes said. "Harry Milne's desire to get the ball to the byeline, Tomas Magnusson's desire to get on the end of it. That's what I'm talking about.
"I always feel we've got a goal in us. It's very rarely we don't score. What a brilliant moment for us. Tynecastle was such a beautiful sight."
Winning Ugly: A Title-Winning Trait
Hearts are not only scoring late goals but also winning matches despite below-par performances, a trait often seen in title-winning teams.
"If you want to challenge for titles and win leagues, you have to win ugly, and Hearts did that tonight," former Celtic defender Charlie Mulgrew told Premier Sports.
Several pundits noted Hearts’ less-than-impressive display. Although McInnes selected an attacking lineup, the team appeared cautious and struggled to maintain composure amid the typical intensity of an Edinburgh derby.
"They'll not really care about the performance, they've got 12 games to create history," former Hearts midfielder Ryan Stevenson told sound. "Harry Milne, for me, he tried everything he possibly could to affect the game, to drive Hearts forward. Other than him, pretty much all of them were stinking."
Scott Allan, former Hibs and Celtic midfielder, offered a more measured critique.
"Tonight was such a big game and to not play well at all... I couldn't see Hearts scoring a goal, I thought there was only going to be one winner and it was Hibs," he said.
"To win like that, clean sheet as well, it says so much about what you're building in there.
"Derek McInnes will not be worried about that performance. What a position that puts Hearts into, going into that game on Sunday."
The upcoming game on Sunday is against Rangers at Ibrox. Hearts won there in September, marking their first victory away to the Glasgow club since 2014. Few could have predicted that Hearts would still lead Rangers in the standings when they next met.
"If they get three points at Ibrox, I think they'll win the league," Stevenson predicted, highlighting the significance of the upcoming match.
