Thomason's Transition to Wrexham and New Position
George Thomason, who made over 100 appearances for Bolton Wanderers, joined Wrexham in July on a three-year contract for an undisclosed fee. Initially recognized as a central midfielder during his five-year tenure at Bolton in League One, Thomason has since adapted to playing as a left wing-back for Wrexham in the Championship.
The 25-year-old, a product of the Blackpool academy, has adjusted to his new role on the left flank with ease, demonstrating versatility and adaptability in his first season at this level.
"I came to the club as a midfielder in the summer but I feel I'm someone who is a lover of football, that's why I take on so much information and want to be adaptable," Thomason told Wales.
"I think it's really important to be adaptable in the modern game because if you can cover multiple roles you give yourself the best chance of playing."
Opportunity Arises Due to Team Changes
Thomason's shift to the wing-back position was facilitated by injuries to Liberato Cacace and the departure of James McClean, which opened up opportunities on the left side. Although he began his time at Wrexham in midfield, Thomason has embraced the wing-back role, describing his approach as "unorthodox" but effective.
"I've really enjoyed playing out there," he added.
"I've built strong relationships in the wide areas with the players around me.
"The way I play at wing-back might be a little bit unorthodox or less traditional but I try to make it my own and bring my own qualities and play to my strengths."
Upcoming Matches and Ambitions
As the season progresses towards its climax, Thomason aims to contribute significantly to Wrexham's pursuit of a historic fourth consecutive promotion. The team is scheduled to face Bristol City on Tuesday night at 19:45 GMT, with both clubs positioned to enter the Championship play-off places with a win.
Thomason started the earlier fixture against Bristol City, which resulted in a 2-0 victory at the Stok Cae Ras, playing in midfield. He hopes to continue contributing goals and assists from his wing-back position to help Wrexham secure a double over the Robins.
"I feel as though I've added to the group and done well," Thomason said.
"I'd like to contribute more to at the top end of the pitch and that's something I always want to add to my game - whether that is goals or assists.
"But in general I'm really happy with how my first six or seven months have gone and I'm continuing to grow and get familiar with this division."
Manager's Perspective on Thomason's Role
Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson highlighted Thomason's tactical understanding as a key factor in his successful transition to wing-back.
"We looked at George in training for a while before we made the change, he was excellent there," Parkinson said.
"He has so much tactical understanding of the game and he's been brilliant.
"He's a very good player to have on the pitch in terms of his leadership qualities, for someone who is relatively young and inexperienced at our club.
"I think he is showing each week what a good player he is."
