Match Delay Due to Severe Weather
England's World Cup last-16 match against Mexico has been postponed by one hour because of severe weather conditions. The game is now scheduled to commence at 02:00 BST on Monday (19:00 local time on Sunday) at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.
Throughout the day, Mexico City has experienced heavy rainfall accompanied by reports of lightning above the stadium where the match is to be held. According to safety protocols, play cannot resume until 30 minutes have elapsed since the last lightning strike was detected within an eight-mile radius of the venue.
Fifa Consultations and Broadcast Information
On Friday, Fifa engaged in discussions with the English and Mexican football associations regarding the match timing. Initially, Fifa proposed moving the kick-off to 19:00 BST on Sunday (12:00 local time), but later reversed this decision, maintaining the original kick-off time.
The match will be broadcast live on BBC One, BBC , BBC Radio 5 Live, and the website and app.
Safety Measures and Regulations
Earlier, a shelter-in-place order was issued at the Azteca Stadium due to adverse weather conditions. Fifa does not have autonomous authority to establish rules concerning delays caused by severe weather; it follows the guidance of local authorities.
In the United States, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) provides recommendations for such situations. The NOAA mandates that if lightning is detected within eight miles of a stadium, the game must be halted. Mexico follows the same regulations.
"The safety and security of all individuals is Fifa's priority."
