Lawlor's Unexpected Rise at Cardiff City
Dylan Lawlor had not started a senior league game for Cardiff City before Brian Barry-Murphy's appointment in June 2025.
Wales defender Dylan Lawlor initially believed he would need to leave Cardiff City to secure regular first-team football this season.
However, the 20-year-old has become a pivotal figure in the Bluebirds' successful return to the Championship.
Given his opportunity by manager Brian Barry-Murphy, Lawlor's confident performances have established him as Wales' first-choice centre-back and attracted interest from several Premier League clubs, with many suggesting he has a bright future at the highest level.
Despite this, the academy graduate admits he did not expect to make such a significant impact and had anticipated pursuing a loan move to gain consistent playing time.
Having appeared 30 times during Cardiff's League One promotion campaign, Lawlor reflected:
"I was hoping for it but, if I'm honest, I wasn't expecting [to make that many appearances] here.
"I was probably looking for a loan move or an experience somewhere else in the Football League.
"But I have got to thank Brian for that, for coming in and putting his trust in me. It's been unbelievable ever since."

Lawlor Praises Barry-Murphy's Coaching Impact
Lawlor, described as "super talented" by former Wales defender Danny Gabbidon, is among several young Cardiff players who have flourished under the guidance of former Manchester City academy coach Brian Barry-Murphy.
The Irish manager was aware of the emerging youthful talent at Cardiff, which he regards as one of the best in Europe, prior to assuming the managerial role at Cardiff City Stadium last summer.
Lawlor believes the 47-year-old deserves considerable credit for transforming Cardiff's fortunes and leading a revitalised squad to promotion at the first attempt.
Having been part of Cardiff's youth system since the age of seven and signing an improved three-year contract in August, Lawlor stated:
"He's been unbelievable,"
"I think everyone's bought into what he's done from the first day he walked in; his change of mentality, the way he sees the game, the way he's handled us all.
"He's been unbelievable and he probably doesn't give himself enough credit for the season we've had.
"And for me personally he's been massive. I don't think there's a better coach to work with in your first season."

Lawlor hopes Barry-Murphy will remain at Cardiff despite interest from rival clubs, acknowledging the genuine excitement surrounding the upcoming season.
He also emphasized the importance of maintaining focus on the remaining fixtures, even after enjoying promotion celebrations alongside teammates who have progressed from academy prospects to key first-team players.
Reflecting on his journey, Lawlor said:
"It's hard to put into words going from playing with some of the boys through the academy to being part of the first team alongside them, it's been unbelievable,"
