David Jeffrey Returns to Management with Portadown Appointment

David Jeffrey will return to football management as the new full-time manager of Portadown. He takes over at the end of the current season, succeeding interim manager Gary Thompson, who assumed the role following Niall Currie's departure earlier this month.

Jeffrey, 63, last managed Ballymena United before stepping down in 2023. Alongside him, David Douglas will join Portadown as head of recruitment and football operations. Douglas previously worked as a performance analyst under Currie from 2023 until 2025.

Career Highlights and Previous Success

Jeffrey's managerial career includes notable achievements at Linfield and Ballymena United. He began managing Linfield in 1997 after a 14-year playing career with Linfield, Ards, and Larne. During his 17-year tenure at Linfield, he secured nine league titles and seven Irish Cups, including six league and cup doubles. Additionally, he led the team to victory in the inaugural Setanta Cup in 2005 before concluding his time there in 2014.

After a two-year break from management, Jeffrey returned to lead Ballymena United at the Ballymena Showgrounds. In his first season, he guided the Sky Blues to their first and only League Cup triumph. Under his leadership, the team also achieved a second-place league finish in 2019.

During his spell at Ballymena United, Jeffrey took the club to two additional League Cup finals, three Irish Cup finals, and two County Antrim Shield finals before resigning in 2023.

Transition and Upcoming Matches

Jeffrey's appointment will officially commence after the current campaign concludes. In the meantime, Gary Thompson will remain in charge for Portadown's final league match of the season against Bangor this Saturday.
