Multiple Cup Finals Between Two South of Scotland Teams

"Every game is a cup final" is a well-known football cliché, but it has become a literal reality for two football clubs in the south of Scotland as the season draws to a close.

Dalbeattie Star and Stranraer Reserves are set to compete against each other in not one, but three cup finals within a span of just 10 days.

These matches will determine the winners of the Potts Cup, Cree Lodge Cup, and Tweedie Cup competitions.

The South of Scotland Football League (SOSFL), which represents the sixth tier of Scottish football, comprises only 11 teams. Despite the small number of clubs, they participate in as many as eight cup competitions organized by the SOSFL, Southern Counties FA, and Wigtownshire and District FA.

While some of these cups include teams outside the SOSFL, this structure increases the likelihood of clubs facing each other multiple times.

Dalbeattie Star and Stranraer Reserves are arguably the strongest teams in the league, having finished first and second respectively.

The first of these encounters occurred on Wednesday night, with Stranraer securing a 1-0 victory.

The second final was scheduled for Friday, followed by the third and final match on 29 May.

League Secretary Comments on Unusual Fixture Schedule

Richard Osborne, the league secretary, remarked on the rarity of such a sequence of cup finals between the same two teams in a brief period.

"It is very unusual for the same two clubs to be competing in three cup finals within 10 days,"
"I am not aware of a similar occurrence in my past 14 years as secretary."

He attributed this unusual schedule to both the quality of the two teams and a backlog caused by numerous cancelled matches.

"It's not unusual for clubs that finish towards the top of the SOSFL to also reach cup finals as traditionally they are the strongest teams that season,"
"We often find we have several cup finals in May, at the end of the season, as finishing the league fixtures is generally a priority."

The draws for all eight local cup competitions are conducted randomly and without seeding, which makes it even more unlikely that the same two teams would meet exclusively in finals.

Each club will host one of the finals at their home ground, while the third final will be held at a neutral venue, Blairmount Park in Newton Stewart.

Stranraer claimed victory in the first match, the Southern Counties FA's Potts Cup, on Wednesday night.

The second final was scheduled for Friday evening, with the concluding match of this unique treble set for 29 May.
