Crusaders Retain Premiership Status After Dramatic Shootout Victory
Crusaders confirmed their place in the Irish Premiership for the upcoming season following a tense penalty shootout win against Annagh United in the play-off. The match concluded with a 4-4 aggregate score after 210 minutes of football, leading to a shootout where Crusaders triumphed 3-1.
Musa Dibaga emerged as the decisive figure, saving two penalties to ensure the Shore Road side's survival in the top tier. The shootout victory was a culmination of a hard-fought encounter that tested both teams' resilience.
Early Penalty Gives Annagh the Lead
The visitors quickly took the lead when Josh Williamson fouled Aaron Rogers inside the penalty area, prompting referee Declan Hassan to award a penalty. Donnelly confidently converted the spot-kick despite Dibaga diving in the right direction.
Dibaga remained alert, making a crucial save midway through the first half to deny Donnelly a second goal. Donnelly had struck a clean shot from the edge of the box, but the goalkeeper's save kept the deficit at one goal.
Second Penalty Saved Before Half-Time
Just before the interval, Annagh were awarded a second penalty after Ryan Swan was fouled inside the area. Donnelly stepped up once more, but this time Dibaga made a vital save, diving the same way to keep the score at 1-0 going into the break.
Annagh Extend Lead Early in Second Half
Eight minutes after the restart, Annagh doubled their advantage. A long throw-in from Craig Taylor caused confusion in the Crusaders' box, allowing Aaron Rogers to head the ball on to Lee Upton, who stretched to poke the ball home.
Crusaders Fight Back
Crusaders reduced the deficit in the 71st minute when substitute Stewart Nixon scored from inside the area. The ball fell kindly to him after a Josh Williamson free-kick was not cleared effectively by the Annagh defence.
Extra Time and Penalties Decide Outcome
With the aggregate score tied at 4-4 after both legs, the match proceeded to extra time in north Belfast. Despite efforts from both sides, neither team managed to score, leading to a penalty shootout to determine the winner.
Dibaga's heroics in goal were pivotal as he saved two penalties during the shootout, helping Crusaders secure their Premiership status. The victory was met with relief by manager Declan Caddell and the entire Crusaders team.
"Musa Dibaga was the hero as he saved two penalties to keep the Shore Road side up, with the Crues winning 3-1 on penalties after the play-off finished 4-4 after 210 minutes of football."
