Mark Hughes Departs Carlisle United

Mark Hughes, who managed Wales to the 2004 European Championship play-offs but lost to Russia, has left Carlisle United by "mutual agreement" after the club failed to secure promotion from the National League.

The former Manchester United and Wales striker joined Carlisle United in February 2025 but was unable to prevent the club's relegation in his first season at Brunton Park.

Despite remaining with the club to restore Carlisle to League Two, the team finished third in the National League, which led to participation in the play-offs. However, they were eliminated in the semi-final following a 2-1 home defeat by Boreham Wood.

Club Statement and Chairman's Remarks

The club confirmed Hughes' departure in a statement released on Thursday, acknowledging the "significant progress" made during the previous season.

"Mark has conducted himself with real professionalism throughout his time at Carlisle United," said chairman Tom Piatak.
"We are grateful for the work he has done, the standards he brought, and the progress made during the season.
Following open and respectful discussions, both parties agreed this was the right time for the club to move in a different direction.
Mark leaves with our thanks and best wishes, and he will always be welcome at Brunton Park."

Hughes' Managerial Background and Carlisle Tenure

Hughes, aged 62, had previous managerial experience at the international level with Wales and in the Premier League with clubs including Manchester City and Blackburn Rovers. He made an unexpected return to coaching in 2022 with Bradford City, departing 20 months later with the club positioned 18th in League Two.

His appointment at Carlisle was also unexpected, bringing a modern-day footballing great to Cumbria. However, after the club's relegation in his first season, the expectation was for immediate promotion.

Although Carlisle United achieved a club-record 95 points, they ultimately fell short of promotion.

Additional Staff Changes and Future Plans

First-team coach Frankie McAvoy is also leaving the club. The club's statement indicated that an announcement regarding the vacant head coach position will be made "in due course."

Former Newcastle United goalkeeper Rob Elliot, who recently left Gateshead, another National League side, has been linked with the head coach role at Carlisle United.
