Cardiff City to Appeal Dismissed £100m Sala Compensation Claim
Cardiff City have announced their intention to appeal a French court's decision to dismiss their claim for over £100 million in compensation related to the death of footballer Emiliano Sala.
Sala, aged 28, and pilot David Ibbotson tragically died when the Piper Malibu aircraft carrying them crashed into the English Channel on the night of 21 January 2019.
The Argentine striker was en route to join Cardiff City, then competing in the Premier League, from FC Nantes in a transfer valued at £15 million.
A prolonged dispute between the two clubs has unfolded since the incident, with the most recent development occurring in March when a French commercial court dismissed Cardiff's claim for compensation from Nantes regarding Sala's loss.
Dismissal of Cardiff City's Claim
Cardiff City had sought more than €120 million (£104 million) in damages, citing loss of income and other related damages based on the premise that Sala would have helped the club maintain its Premier League status.
However, the Nantes commercial court rejected Cardiff's claims and additionally ordered the Welsh club to pay approximately £400,000 in legal fees and moral damages to Nantes.
This penalty was required to be paid immediately, irrespective of any potential appeal.
Following the verdict, Cardiff's legal team stated they would deliberate on whether to pursue an appeal, which would be heard by the Court of Appeal in Rennes.
Cardiff had a three-month period to decide on appealing, with the deadline falling this week. The club has now confirmed that they have formally lodged their intention to appeal.
Implications of the Appeal
An appeal initiates a new trial, offering a second opportunity for the case to be fully re-examined. This process can extend up to two years.
