Bonmati Included in Spain Squad After Injury Recovery

Aitana Bonmati, the recipient of the Ballon d'Or Feminin in 2023, 2024, and 2025, has been named in the Spain squad for the upcoming critical FIFA Women's World Cup qualifier against England. This selection follows her recovery from a broken leg.

The Barcelona midfielder suffered a fracture to her left fibula after an awkward fall during a Spain training session in November. After months of rehabilitation, Bonmati made her return to competitive football earlier this month.

She featured as a late substitute in Barcelona's victory over Lyon in the UEFA Women's Champions League final on Saturday, marking a significant milestone in her comeback.

Spain faces a must-win situation against England at the Estadi Mallorca Son Moix on 5 June (20:00 BST) to maintain control over their chances of finishing top of their qualifying group. The teams previously met in April at Wembley, where Spain lost 1-0 to England.

Only the winners of each of the four League A qualifying groups will secure direct qualification to the 2027 World Cup in Brazil. The runners-up will enter the play-offs, where they will be drawn against the group winners and the two best-ranked runners-up from League C.

Should Spain draw against England, they would need to defeat Iceland in Reykjavik and rely on England losing to Ukraine (both matches on 9 June, 20:00 BST) for Spain to top the group ahead of the world and European champions.
