Controversy Over McCabe's Hair Pull in Champions League Quarter-Final
Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor expressed frustration with the refereeing standards after Arsenal's Katie McCabe avoided a red card for pulling Alyssa Thompson's hair during their Champions League quarter-final match, which resulted in Chelsea's exit from the competition.
The Blues were attempting to equalize late in the game after scoring a stoppage-time goal to bring the aggregate score to 3-2. During this critical moment, McCabe appeared to reach out and tug on the hair of Thompson, an American winger who was advancing with the ball.
Despite the apparent foul, McCabe was not shown a yellow card, and the video assistant referee (VAR) did not recommend that referee Frida Mia Klarlund review the incident. Bompastor, visibly upset, was initially shown a yellow card for protesting the decision and was subsequently sent off for continuing her objections. However, she remained on the touchline as Arsenal maintained their lead to secure a place in the semi-finals.
Prepared to highlight the incident, Bompastor used her mobile phone to show a replay during a passionate interview with BBC Two.
"For me, it is clearly a red card for the Arsenal player. She's pulling Alyssa Thompson's hair," Bompastor said.
"If the VAR is not able to check that situation, I don't know why we have the VAR.
"I'm the one getting a red card when I think the Arsenal player should be the one getting a red card."
Following the match, McCabe addressed the incident on Instagram, stating:
"I just want to clarify that I was genuinely reaching for the shirt. I wouldn't ever want to pull someone's hair. Full respect to Thompson."
Reactions from Players and Officials
Former England captain Steph Houghton commented on the incident:
"It doesn't look great, does it? Chelsea had just scored, Thompson was driving with the ball. It is really, really cynical and it doesn't look great."
Bompastor noted that Thompson was "crying and emotional" after the game.
"She's trying her best on the pitch in both games and it is not good enough - when you are playing football and someone pulls your hair, it's bad," she added.
After both players went to the ground, McCabe appeared to apologize to Thompson. Arsenal manager Renee Slegers remarked:
"I didn't see the incident on the pitch when it was happening but I did see Katie going to Alyssa to apologise.
My assumption is it's not intentional but it is of course unlucky."
Brighton midfielder Fran Kirby also weighed in on the situation:
"It's a surprise that they've not looked back at that on VAR. I don't think McCabe means to grab Thompson's hair. I think she goes to grab her shirt."
Previous Criticism of Officiating
Following the first leg at Emirates Stadium, Bompastor had criticized the refereeing, calling for "more respect" in women's football after Chelsea had two goals disallowed.
"Tonight we are speaking too much about the referees and that was the case last week," Bompastor said.
"But everyone needs to understand that's the difference between being qualified and not being qualified. It has a big impact on players.
"I'm really proud of my players, I think they gave everything and they don't deserve that level of refereeing again."
Match Outcome
Arsenal edged past Chelsea to reach the Champions League semi-finals, despite the controversy surrounding the officiating and the hair-pulling incident.
