Billy Gilmour Faces Mental Challenge After World Cup Injury

Billy Gilmour has revealed the emotional difficulty he is experiencing after being forced to withdraw from Scotland's World Cup squad due to injury. The 24-year-old Napoli midfielder sustained a knee injury during Scotland's 4-1 warm-up friendly victory against Curacao at Hampden Park on Saturday, which led to his substitution shortly before half-time.

Although Gilmour managed to leave the pitch on his own, subsequent medical scans confirmed that he would be unable to participate in the tournament. He departed the team hotel on crutches, wearing a knee brace. Manchester United's 19-year-old Tyler Fletcher has been named as his replacement in the squad.

Gilmour's Public Statement

Speaking publicly for the first time since the injury, Gilmour, who has previously played for Rangers, Chelsea, and Brighton & Hove Albion, expressed his feelings in an Instagram post:

"I haven't got the words to describe how I'm feeling right now.
Being so close to a childhood dream of mine, to play in a World Cup, and now it has been taken away from me with an injury. It's been a tough one to get my head around.
Your support and kind messages over the last few days mean the world to me and haven't gone unnoticed, so thank you so much.
I'll see you all back doing what I love again soon, but until then, let's get behind the team and cheer them on. Come on Scotland!"

The team's Group C campaign begins on Sunday, 14 June, with a match against Haiti, followed by games against Morocco and Brazil.
