Future of Boucher Road Playing Fields and Music Venue Uncertain

The future of Belfast's largest outdoor music venue remains uncertain after Belfast City Council agreed to install new sports pitches at Boucher Road Playing Fields.

The site is planned to be redeveloped with a new football pitch and two new Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) pitches.

Boucher Road Playing Fields has a capacity for up to 40,000 people and has previously hosted concerts by artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Ed Sheeran, and Snow Patrol. However, it remains unclear whether the venue will continue to host music events after 2027.

Council officials will explore alternative locations for music venues in Belfast, and the possibility of Boucher Road hosting both sporting and music events has not been excluded.

Council Deliberations and Decision

Councillors at Belfast City Council (BCC) spent the past week debating the future of the site.

While most councillors supported returning the site to sporting use, there was disagreement over whether to delay the decision until an alternative venue for large-scale music events was secured.

On Monday, the council decided to postpone the decision regarding the future of Boucher Playing Fields. However, on Friday morning, a council committee voted 10-9 in favor of installing new sports pitches.

The issue was then presented to the full council for ratification on Friday night.

Amendment and Council Commitment

The Green Party's Áine Groogan proposed an amendment that was passed with support from Sinn Féin and the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP).

The amendment approved the construction of three new pitches at Boucher and addressed concerns about large-scale music events. It stated:

"The council acknowledges the potential conflict with the site's existing use as the largest venue for major concerts and events in Belfast and recognises the importance of ensuring we maintain a site that is capable of hosting on a similar or indeed greater scale going forward, with appropriate supporting facilities and infrastructure.
We commit to working with the large scale events sector, statutory partners and local stakeholders to identify and assess suitable alternative sites across the city or the potential for managing both within the Boucher Road Playing Fields.
A report will be brought back on these options within two months."

Upcoming Concerts and Future Uncertainty

Concerts scheduled at Boucher Road Playing Fields for this year and next will proceed as planned. However, the status of the venue for events from 2028 onwards remains unclear.

There is currently a shortage of council-owned sports pitches in Belfast.

Reactions from Councillors

Sinn Féin councillor Natasha Brennan commented on the decision:

"It is fantastic that Boucher Road has been given the green light to transform into a first-class sporting hub."

Alliance Party councillor Micky Murray expressed concerns about the timing of the decision:

"The council should have waited until more information was available about the provision of large-scale music events before making a decision."

Next Steps

Attention will now focus on the forthcoming council report that will explore options for music venues in Belfast. This report is expected to be completed before the end of April.
