Early Signs of Talent at Newport County
Manchester City's Antoine Semenyo has scored three goals in 34 appearances for Ghana since his international debut in 2022.
A pivotal moment in Semenyo's early career occurred during a training session at Newport County, where then-manager Mike Flynn observed the young player hold off a shoulder barge from one of the squad's senior players. Flynn recalls,
"He just held him off the ball without a problem. You knew he was a special kid. He was raw but we'd already seen he had talent and how good he was off both feet. But in that moment, you knew he was ready. We started him the next game."
Eight years later, Semenyo returned to the same training ground on the outskirts of Newport, where the Ghana national team was based to prepare for the World Cup. No longer a young striker seeking his place, Semenyo has become a £62.5 million attacking talent expected to make an impact for the Black Stars in Group L against Panama, England, and Croatia.
From Loan Player to International Star
When Semenyo joined Newport County on loan from Bristol City in 2018, he had not yet made a senior professional start. Wales midfielder Josh Sheehan, who was a teammate at Rodney Parade, reflects on Semenyo's early days:
"Back then of course he was just a lad that's turned up on loan from Bristol City and who'd been playing non-league not too long before. You don't tend to judge too much, you just think you'll see what he's like in training, and wonder if an 18-year-old is going to get a bit bullied in League Two. But, to be honest, he was just a different level. Strong, fast, ability, almost like a complete forward – you knew he was going to kick on and do something special."
Flynn had quickly recognized Semenyo's potential, agreeing to the loan after only five minutes of watching him play. Despite having two experienced strikers in Padraig Amond and Jamille Matt, both key players in Newport's FA Cup run that season, the team adapted their formation to accommodate Semenyo on the left wing.
"The problem we had is that we had two good, experienced strikers," Flynn explains. "But we just knew we had to get him in, so we used a new formation with him on the left. We just couldn't leave him out."
Development and Impact at Newport County
Under Flynn's guidance, Semenyo made 32 appearances for Newport County during the 2018-2019 season, scoring his first senior professional goals while on loan from Bristol City.

Mark O'Brien, Semenyo's captain at Newport, highlights the player's physical and mental attributes during that period:
"I think most fans could see he was going places, but what stood out for me was what he was like on the training ground and in the dressing room. What stuck out as a player was how strong and powerful he was for a kid. But his attitude was everything. He'd give everything he had, whether it was in training or on the pitch. That's the key and you can see he's kept that. He was like this blank canvass that wanted to learn from everything."
O'Brien notes the strong team environment at Newport, which would not tolerate entitlement, especially as Premier League interest in Semenyo grew.
"Perhaps it was because he didn't realise how good he was or how good he could be. He was just really humble and respectful. And that's why we all wanted him to do well, because you definitely thought this was the beginning of something from him."
Rising Through the Ranks and International Recognition
Semenyo's performances in the FA Cup, including a notable win over Leicester City, attracted attention. Martin Keown described him as "a star in the making," and Premier League clubs reportedly monitored his progress.
After Newport's fourth-round draw against Middlesbrough, where Semenyo's strength assisted a late equalizer, Bristol City recalled him amid a £2 million bid from Chelsea. Flynn expresses his mixed feelings about the recall:
"They'd had a £2m bid from Chelsea and wanted him back early – I was gutted. He was obviously a special talent, but he was a special kid first and foremost. He'd have this smile that would light up a room. His parents and family mean everything to him, and that upbringing and attitude has helped him get to where he is now."
Since then, Semenyo has progressed to the Premier League, joining Bournemouth for £10 million before moving to Manchester City, where he scored in the FA Cup final victory over Chelsea in May. This goal was among 11 he has scored since joining Manchester City in January.

World Cup Aspirations with Ghana
Semenyo qualifies to represent Ghana through his parents and made his international debut in 2022 ahead of the Qatar World Cup, initially without a starting role. Now, with three goals in 34 caps, he is a key figure for the Black Stars as they prepare for the World Cup.
Ghana captain Jordan Ayew praises Semenyo's progress:
"He's done brilliant. We all know the season he's had. He took his form at Bournemouth to Manchester City and Ghanaians are proud of him and as a team we are proud of him. We just hope that he will keep on doing it - and doing it for Ghana."
