Elmo Sparks Controversy Amid Knicks NBA Finals Run

New York City is buzzing with excitement as the New York Knicks compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) finals. However, one notable New Yorker’s neutral stance has drawn criticism from passionate Knicks fans.

Elmo, the iconic red puppet from Sesame Street, posted a message on X earlier this week regarding the finals.

"Elmo hopes both teams have fun!"
Sesame Street, the fictional neighborhood Elmo calls home, is located in Manhattan.

Many fans expressed frustration over what they perceive as Elmo's unwillingness to fully support the Knicks. One online commenter labeled Elmo a

"Traitor."
The Knicks are currently leading a best-of-seven series against the San Antonio Spurs for the NBA championship, marking their first finals appearance since 1999.

New Yorkers have taken to the streets and crowded into lively bar watch parties, especially after the Knicks secured a victory in the series opener on Wednesday. Support for the team is widespread throughout the city, and many fans have not hesitated to voice their displeasure with Elmo’s neutral message.

Following Elmo’s post, numerous viral tweets emerged, many containing strong language directed at the beloved children’s character. One of the milder responses read:

"Elmo don't forget the streets that raised you."
Another fan stated:
"Elmo, you can't both sides this one."

City Agencies Join the Criticism

Even official New York City government agencies have joined in the criticism. The New York City Police Department (NYPD) took a jab at Elmo by comparing him to the impersonators who entertain tourists in Times Square.

The NYPD’s official account tweeted:

"Just like in Times Square, we think this Elmo is an imposter."

Additionally, the city’s transportation department threatened to remove the official Sesame Street sign installed in Upper Manhattan during former Mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration.

Elmo Responds with Humor

On Thursday, Elmo addressed the backlash with a playful message:

"KNICKS that last message! Elmo didn't mean to SPUR you on!"

Elmo first appeared on Sesame Street in 1980 and is widely recognized for promoting kindness and unity. Despite this, the character has encountered social media controversies before.

Past Social Media Incidents Involving Elmo

In 2022, Elmo’s ongoing feud with Sesame Street’s pet rock, Rocco, inspired a wave of memes. The humor centered on Elmo’s frustration that Rocco believed the rock could perform human activities such as eating cookies or using the toilet.

In 2024, Elmo received a variety of sarcastic and jaded responses after tweeting:

"How is everybody doing?"

Last year, the official Elmo account was hacked, resulting in the posting of antisemitic messages. The Sesame Street producers condemned the posts as

"disgusting."
The hackers also posted messages attacking former US President Donald Trump and called for the release of files related to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

A spokesperson stated:

"Elmo's X account was compromised by an unknown hacker who posted disgusting messages, including antisemitic and racist posts."

Knicks Fans Demand Loyalty

Now embroiled in a different kind of controversy, Knicks supporters are warning Elmo to show loyalty as the team advances in the finals.

One fan commented online:

"This is how serious NY is taking this Finals. Elmo had to retract his statement cause the city was like you a New Yorker."
