Leicestershire Take Command on Day Three at Sophie Gardens
Jonny Tattersall achieved his first half-century since transferring from Yorkshire to Leicestershire, contributing significantly to his team's commanding position against Glamorgan.
Rothesay County Championship, Division One, Sophie Gardens, Cardiff (day three)
Glamorgan 440: Crane 99, Carlson 95, Dickson 90, van der Gugten 52; Holland 2-33
Leicestershire 500-5 (144 overs): Weatherald 104 ret hurt, Tattersall 86*, R Patel 79, Holland 79, Eskinazi 50; Hadley 2-90
Points: Glamorgan 4 pts, Leicestershire 6 pts
Leicestershire's batsmen dominated the third day against Glamorgan, amassing 500-5 and establishing a 60-run lead over the hosts at Cardiff. Ian Holland scored 79, Jonny Tattersall remained unbeaten on 86, and Stevie Eskinazi contributed 50, with only four wickets falling on a hybrid pitch.
Paceman Ryan Hadley posed a notable threat with his consistently short-pitched bowling, claiming two wickets. Despite this, Leicestershire steadily accumulated runs, positioning themselves to apply pressure on Glamorgan in their second innings.
Australian opener Jake Weatherald retired hurt due to cramp after scoring a century on the second evening and did not return to bat.
Leicestershire Batting Performance
Resuming at 215-1, Leicestershire's batsmen appeared in control from the outset. Glamorgan's only early success was dismissing night-watchman Josh Davey, who was stumped after charging at Mason Crane for 15 runs once he had fulfilled his role.
Captain Ian Holland reached an unremarkable but steady 50 off 115 balls, including four fours, facing little difficulty. Some uncharacteristic fielding errors by Glamorgan highlighted their struggles in the field.
Lewis Hill and Holland compiled a solid 83-run partnership before a hostile new-ball spell from Australian bowler Ryan Hadley yielded two wickets. Holland was caught on the uppercut to third man, and Hill was dismissed playing on to a short ball for 42, halting Leicestershire's momentum.
Glamorgan's bowlers were unable to maintain sustained pressure as Tattersall and Eskinazi built a 107-run partnership, playing with measured risk to secure four batting points.
Former Middlesex player Stevie Eskinazi continued his strong form for Leicestershire, having already scored a century and a fifty earlier in the season. He was bowled by an Andy Gorvin inswinger shortly after reaching his half-century.
Tattersall survived a close short-leg chance off Hadley on 58 as Leicestershire progressed steadily, though without the aggressive scoring displayed by Weatherald and Rishi Patel the previous evening, who had scored at a rate of five runs per over.
Ben Cox, unbeaten on 31, joined Tattersall to maintain pressure on Glamorgan, who can take some encouragement from the limited number of wickets lost since the first morning as they strive to avoid defeat.
