Friday's round-up
Surrey increased security measures at the Oval following a knife attack at Golders Green, as off-field developments dominated day one of round five of the county cricket season.
Surrey are in communication with the Met police and will adjust our own security measures in line with the increased threat level. We want to ensure that all staff, spectators and players feel safe and secure.
On the field, which had been a placid surface the previous week, Sussex were reduced to 92 for seven wickets, largely due to Jordan Clark's bowling figures of five for 68. However, the lower order responded strongly, with Fynn Hudson-Prentice scoring an aggressive 53. Subsequently, Jack Carson and Ollie Robinson each compiled boundary-filled centuries.
Robinson, who is the visiting captain, reached his century with a six before declaring the innings. Surrey, missing Gus Atkinson who was rested by England, left the field visibly frustrated. Jamie Smith took over wicketkeeping duties after Ben Foakes was ruled out due to an injury sustained while bowling in the final afternoon against Essex.
At Canterbury, Kent's captain Daniel Bell-Drummond scored an impressive century after Derbyshire elected to field. Zak Crawley contributed a boundary-rich 44. Kent, currently bottom of Division Two, had earlier in the week disabled comments on the club’s social media accounts as a precautionary
"duty of care".
Taunton witnessed an exciting day where an enthusiastic crowd enjoyed 45 minutes of aggressive batting from Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root against Somerset’s bowling attack. After lunch, Lewis Gregory dismissed Root, and Craig Overton, who had earlier dropped Bairstow at slip, induced an inside edge leading to a collapse where Yorkshire lost seven wickets for 38 runs, being all out for 162.
Josh Thomas, aged 21, scored a courageous maiden Championship century, including a six, to put Somerset into the lead.
Ben Stokes, who is recovering from a broken cheekbone, was seen practicing in the nets at Lord’s representing Durham. Meanwhile, on the main pitch, Sam Robson (87) and Ryan Higgins (57) helped Middlesex approach a total of 300 runs.
At the County Ground, Gareth Roderick scored 164 not out, marking Worcestershire’s first century of the season and applying pressure on Northamptonshire.
Glamorgan gained a dominant position against Hampshire at Southampton thanks to a careful maiden Championship century by Zain ul Hassan and a 158 from Kiran Carlson. At Grace Road, Nottinghamshire flourished after being put in to bat by Leicestershire, with Ben Slater scoring 178 and Ben Duckett achieving his third consecutive half-century.
