Rashid Khan's Milestone and Match Summary

Rashid Khan, who debuted for Afghanistan against Zimbabwe in October 2015, reached a remarkable milestone by taking his 700th wicket in T20 cricket during Afghanistan's victory over the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the Men's T20 World Cup Group D match held in Delhi.

The leg-spinner achieved this milestone in an unusual manner, as the mode of dismissal was hit wicket, a first in his career spanning 699 previous wickets. UAE batter Muhammad Arfan attempted a reverse sweep against Rashid's delivery in the 15th over but inadvertently dislodged the stumps with his bat.

This wicket marked Rashid's 191st in T20 internationals. When combined with his 509 wickets in List A domestic T20 matches, it made him the first player to reach the 700-wicket milestone in T20 cricket. Notably, this was the only instance in 11,794 balls bowled in T20 cricket where Rashid claimed a wicket via hit wicket. Rashid concluded his spell with figures of 1-24 from four overs.

Azmatullah Omarzai was the standout bowler for Afghanistan, taking 4-15, helping restrict UAE to 160-9 in their 20 overs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Sohaib Khan was the top scorer for UAE, hitting six fours and four sixes to amass 68 runs off 48 balls. Alishan Sharafu contributed 40 runs from 31 deliveries.

Afghanistan's Batting Response

Afghanistan's innings began with the loss of Rahmanullah Gurbaz for a duck. However, opener Ibrahim Zadran played a composed innings, scoring 53 runs off 41 balls, which helped Afghanistan make significant progress towards the target.

Muhammad Arfan took 2-30 for UAE, attempting to slow Afghanistan's chase. Nevertheless, Azmatullah Omarzai played a crucial role with the bat, following his bowling performance by scoring an unbeaten 40 off 21 balls. His efforts ensured Afghanistan reached the target with four balls remaining, securing a five-wicket victory.

Implications for Group D Standings

This victory earned Afghanistan their first points in Group D. To advance, Afghanistan must defeat New Zealand in their final group match and improve their net run-rate to surpass both New Zealand and UAE.

UAE, also on two points, need to win their final game against South Africa and maintain a superior net run-rate compared to New Zealand and Afghanistan to keep their qualification hopes alive.
