Northamptonshire Maintain T20 Blast Winning Streak as Former Players Shine for England

Northamptonshire maintain a perfect T20 Blast record as former players shine for England. Highlights include key performances from Liam Dawson, Rehan Ahmed, and challenges faced by Lancashire and Middlesex.

1. Steelbacks’ Record Remains Untarnished

Emilio Gay highlighted during his TV interview against New Zealand how two former Northamptonshire players had opened the batting together for England at Lord’s, with Ben Duckett also beginning his career at Wantage Road. Observers keeping track of Northamptonshire’s results would note their perfect record of five wins from five matches in the T20 Blast, placing them at the top of the Central and West Group.

At Chester-le-Street, the Steelbacks faced a challenging situation after losing their two Australian batsmen, Chris Lynn and Nathan McSweeney, for just three runs. With no partnership reaching 50 runs, Durham were favourites at the halfway point.

However, David Willey and Ben Sanderson demonstrated their experience during the powerplay and maintained composure. The decisive moments came from the fifth bowler’s overs, with Willey turning to Saif Zaib and James Sales. The two batting all-rounders combined figures of 4-0-26-3, securing Northamptonshire another four points to take home after a long journey.

2. Taylor’s Bowling Leads Gloucestershire to Victory Over Worcestershire

Gloucestershire sit second in the table with 20 points, having played one more game. Jack Taylor’s side secured a narrow home victory against Worcestershire, marking their third consecutive win.

Defending a target of 149 required taking wickets, and Taylor relied on his tall fast bowlers Marchant de Lange (6ft 7in) and Duan Jansen (6ft 8in). Utilizing their height and pace, they claimed six wickets, dismissing Worcestershire just one boundary short in the final over.

Veteran Gloucestershire supporters may recall with nostalgia another formidable South African quick who excelled for the county. It is hoped that Mike Procter was watching approvingly, perhaps with his shirt unbuttoned to the navel.

3. Dawson Excels as Hampshire Hawks Extend Lead

Hampshire Hawks have opened an eight-point advantage at the top of the South Group, with five wins—two more than their closest competitors.

Liam Dawson was instrumental in their win over Sussex, a team that started the season strongly but appears to be fading. Dawson, who unexpectedly retired from red-ball cricket last month, scored 52 runs and took 3 for 20 in his full bowling quota, continuing his impressive form. He now has 138 runs in the Blast at an average near 50 and a strike rate exceeding 150.

The 36-year-old’s decision to step away from longer formats not only provides opportunities for younger players but also improves his work-life balance and may prolong his career.

4. Essex’s Winning Streak Boosts South Group Position

Essex have won three consecutive matches, elevating them to second place in the South Group.

After a commanding first innings partnership of 133 runs in 16 overs by 21-year-olds Charlie Allison and Luc Benkenstein, Simon Harmer’s bowling attack dismantled a low-confidence Middlesex side. Harmer was the only bowler not to take a wicket as Middlesex’s batting lineup collapsed, being all out in under 18 overs.

Middlesex currently sit at the bottom of the group after five losses. With Sussex and Lancashire also struggling, one-sixth of the counties face difficulties. The domestic cricket structure must be robust enough to prevent such issues.

5. Rehan Ahmed’s Impact for Yorkshire

Yorkshire, having defeated Lancashire to secure four wins out of five, aimed to extend their lead in the North Group over third-place Leicestershire with a victory at Grace Road. However, the unpredictable nature of T20 cricket can thwart such ambitions.

Rehan Ahmed, a versatile cricketer, made a significant impact. Opening the batting, he was dismissed for a duck as Leicestershire posted 147 for 8, with Nick Kelly top-scoring at 44. During Yorkshire’s innings, Ahmed took key wickets, including Adam Lyth, and created a four-wicket gap in the middle order through three wickets and one run out.

Yorkshire remain top of the group, though Ahmed’s performance prevented a more comfortable position at the halfway stage. At 21, Ahmed is a talented player whose varied skills may complicate his path to consistent international selection.

6. Lancashire’s Struggles Evident at Blackpool

Recently, Lancashire considered introducing a subscription model for their YouTube channel, though questions about the team’s recent performances may have tempered enthusiasm.

Despite challenges in broadcasting from the chilly and windy Stanley Park in Blackpool, commentator Scott Read and colleagues maintained the coverage with professionalism and good humor, even as the Glamorgan team remained pessimistic.

Fans familiar with Lancashire’s form would not have prematurely predicted a win for the visitors, despite needing 41 runs from 11 balls with eight wickets down. Experienced players Chris Cooke and Timm van der Gugten performed well, but the question remains: how does a team lose from such a position?

Liam Livingstone scored 81 off 37 balls and took 3-13 in his four overs, but his teammates managed only 111 runs off 13.5 overs and conceded 4-186 in 16 overs. Lancashire, weakened by injuries but fielding six internationals, delivered a performance that was insufficient once again.
