Rothesay County Championship, Division One, Sophia Gardens, Cardiff (Day Three)
Glamorgan leg-spinner Mason Crane was the standout performer with figures of 5-55 as Yorkshire were bowled out for 226 in Cardiff. The home side ended day three on 111-3, holding a lead of 187 runs, adopting a cautious approach to maintain their advantage going into the final day.
Glamorgan’s decision to include Crane and play with just three seamers in the opening round of the season proved effective. Debutant Australian seamer Ryan Hadley also impressed, taking 3-62 in a hostile spell.
San Whiteman made a confident 48 on his debut before becoming the first victim of Crane’s bowling. Matthew Revis contributed a resilient 50, leading the lower-order resistance for Yorkshire.
Yorkshire were without their captain Jonny Bairstow due to a fractured thumb. After a painful practice session, Bairstow ruled himself out before the start of the third day, with Will Luxton stepping in as a full playing substitute. Under new regulations, Bairstow must miss the next game against Hampshire but is expected to return for the home match against Sussex on 24 April.
Yorkshire Innings
Timm van der Gugten struck early when Finlay Bean edged a catch behind to Chris Cooke. This dismissal brought debutant Whiteman to the crease, joining Adam Lyth in a confident partnership that scored 76 runs at a rate of four an over.
Whiteman, born in Doncaster but having played his first-class cricket with Western Australia, displayed promise by striking nine boundaries during his innings. He was dropped at slip off Ben Kellaway before being dismissed lbw by Crane’s googly. Crane then quickly removed James Wharton lbw on the fourth ball and bowled substitute Luxton (14) behind his legs after a missed pull shot.
Adam Lyth reached 37 before being caught off a delivery from Ryan Hadley, the New South Wales paceman. Crane’s sharp turn then accounted for George Hill, who was bowled playing down the wrong line.
Revis and substitute captain Dom Bess staged a brief revival as Yorkshire maintained a quicker scoring rate. Bess survived some tense moments against Crane during his breezy 32 before being given out lbw to van der Gugten. Hadley’s shorter deliveries then dismissed Logan van Beek (6) and Revis, the latter falling immediately after hitting a six to reach 50 off 78 balls.
Crane completed his impressive five-wicket haul by having Ben Coad caught at slip for 12.
Glamorgan Innings
The spin-heavy trend continued as Bess claimed Asa Tribe lbw for 19, marking his 300th first-class wicket. Glamorgan resumed their innings in a similarly cautious manner as in their first innings, facing an accurate bowling attack.
Sean Dickson fell early to Bess, while Eddie Byrom contributed a solid 40 before being caught off van Beek. The first three wickets fell to rare attacking shots.
A lengthy evening session in chilly sunshine produced limited excitement as Kiran Carlson (32 not out) and Colin Ingram (18 not out) focused on stabilising Glamorgan’s position.
